How does the birth control pill work?
Oral contraceptive pills are commonly referred to as, ‘the pill’ and contain synthetic female hormones called oestrogen and progesterone. These are produced naturally in the female body by the ovaries which are part of the female reproductive system. Sometimes the birth control pill is referred to as the combined pill because it combines these two hormones.
The birth control pill is taken daily for 21 days with a 7-day gap when there is some bleeding. This 28-day cycle is repeated every month. Contraceptive pills work by preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg (ovum) each month, this is called ovulation. It also thickens the mucous in the neck of the womb so it is harder for sperm to penetrate and thins the lining of the womb so there is less chance of a fertilised egg successfully implanting in the lining of the womb.
How effective is the birth control pill?
If contraceptive pills are taken correctly then they can have a protection rate of 99% which means that less than one in one hundred women become pregnant. There are other methods of birth control which are even more effective but the pill is attractive because you can stop taking it when you want and it also has very few side effects. Protection can be significantly affected by human error, even taking the pill at a different time each day and other methods of contraception do not have this disadvantage. Some women have to consider other forms of contraception because they have health conditions or lifestyle issues which makes the pill an unsuitable choice for them.
