Merbentyl Dicycloverine stops the sudden muscle contractions (spasms) in the gut and minimises pain, cramps, bloating and discomfort. Merbentyl Dicycloverine is also used as a pain-relieving agent for infantile colic.

Merbentyl contains Dicyclomine hydrochloride as its active ingredient. This active reagent belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergic antispasmodics. Anticholinergic agent blocks the action of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. This inhibits nerve impulses responsible for involuntary movement of the smooth muscles thus, reduces spasms of the muscles of the gut.

Antispasmodic agent of this medication relaxes the smooth muscles of the stomach and intestines and slows down their natural movements. This property of Merbentyl Dicycloverine reduces painful cramps and bloating in the gastrointestinal tract.

Merbentyl Dicycloverine is an anticholinergic antispasmodic drug and it helps minimising painful symptoms of many gastrointestinal diseases. Merbentyl can be used for treating:

  • Pain and cramps of stomach and intestines
  • Spasms of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Symptoms of functional bowel or irritable bowel syndrome
  • Bloating and gastric discomfort

  • Place the tablet in your mouth
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water
  • Take this medication before or after meals

This medication is prescribed by the doctor taking individual requirements of every patient under consideration. The doctor may change the dosage depending on the patient’s response to therapy with Merbentyl Dicycloverine. Following are the most commonly prescribed doses:

For Adults and Children Older Than 12 Years

The usual dosage for adults and children older than 12 years is one or two tablets 3 times a day.

For Children 2 To 11 Years of Age

For two to eleven year old children the usual dose of Merbentyl Dicycloverine is one tablet 3 times a day. Merbentyl syrup can also be used for this age group.

When using this medication, take precautionary steps mentioned here or on the leaflet available with the tablets.

Before Using Merbentyl Dicycloverine

  • Make sure that you are not allergic or intolerant to any ingredient present in these tablets.
  • Check with your doctor or your pharmacist if you have glaucoma, enlarged prostate or hiatus hernia associated with heartburn and indigestion.
  • If you are using any prescription or non-prescription drugs, make sure your doctor knows about it. This is because taking any other medication with Merbentyl may affect the way it works.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning for a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Make sure your doctor knows if you have a problem in digesting certain sugars as Merbentyl Dicycloverine tablets contains various sugars.
  • Do not take this medication if you have obstructive gastrointestinal tract disease, obstructive uropathy, severe ulcerative colitis, high blood pressure or severe acid reflux.
  • Let your doctor know if you have a history of any cardiovascular diseases like stroke or heart attack.

While Taking Merbentyl Dicycloverine

  • Always take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • If you have taken more than the prescribed amount, contact your doctor or go to the hospital immediately.
  • If you forget to take your dose on time, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the first dose altogether if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose.
  • Don’t stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor first.
  • Continue taking your medicine even if you feel better. If you stop without your doctor’s approval, your pain and cramps might come back.

If you develop any new symptoms or your symptoms are getting worse, call your physician immediately.

Like any other medication, this one also has its side effects. The common side effects of Merbentyl Dicycloverine include dry mouth or thirst, dizziness, blurred eyesight, rash, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, difficulty passing urine and feeling tired or sleepy.
