Cilique is a birth control pill that works by preventing sperm from reaching the egg (a process known as fertilization). The hormones in the pill do not allow ovulation to occur. If there is no ovulation, there will be no egg that the sperm can fertilize and so pregnancy does not occur. Also, the hormones in the birth control pill make the mucus from your cervix (the lower part of your uterus) thicken and block the sperm from reaching the egg, like a security guard who lets nothing go.

What is Cilique?

Cilique are birth control pills. It is the most effective reversible contraceptive method if administered correctly. It is a combined contraceptive treatment, which means it contains two synthetic versions of female hormones: estrogens and progesterone. Together, these hormones work to prevent pregnancy.

How does it work?

This process of these contraceptive pills is handled by the hormones progesterone and estrogen. When estrogen levels peak, for example, ovulation begins. Estrogen is also responsible for maintaining, repairing, and thickening the lining of the uterus. Progesterone is responsible for preserving the lining of the uterus during the second half of the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy. When fertilization does not occur, the egg breaks down once it reaches the uterus. The lining of the endometrium also breaks. This is what is known as a period.

What are the benefits of taking it?

If you follow the instructions and take the Cilique contraceptive pill correctly, it offers very good protection against pregnancy.

Just take a pill every day and start the new packets on time. That is all. However, if you forget to take your pills, they will not work as well.

Also, you can use condoms simultaneously with birth control pills for maximum protection against pregnancy. Extra benefit: the condom also protects you against STIs (sexually transmitted infections).

The pill offers health benefits.

Side effects are not always a bad thing. In addition to being a contraceptive and preventing pregnancy, the pill can be used for other things, as it has many benefits.

Both the combined pill and the one that contains only progestin, reduce menstrual pain (colic), make your periods lighter, and reduce the risk of ectopic pregnancy.

The combination pill can also help reduce or prevent the following:

  • Acne
  • Thinning bones
  • Cysts on your breasts or on your ovaries
  • Endometrial cancer (the lining of your uterus) and ovarian cancer
  • Serious infections in your ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus
  • Iron deficiency (anemia)

premenstrual syndrome

The pill can help with your menstrual periods.

Many people like the birth control pill because it makes their periods more regular and easier to predict. The hormones in the pill can also help ease your menstrual cramps and make your periods lighter. You can also use the pill to prevent your period from falling, which is very convenient for people who do not want to have a period on a special occasion, or who do not want to have a period every month.

How do I use it and its dosage?

While no contraceptive treatment can fully guarantee results, Cilique is 99% effective. The cilique birth control dosage is the following.

  • Each strip contains 21 pills, all marked with days of the week.
  • Take one pill every day for 21 days. The days of the week serve as a guide.
  • Make sure you take your pill at the same time every day
  • Swallow the pill whole with water. Do not chew.
  • After these 21 days, stop taking the pill for the next seven days.
  • After this seven-day period, the course begins again.
  • Do not take Cilique if you are pregnant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cilique is mostly prescribed to help regulate irregular periods. It provides consistent hormone levels, which makes periods more predictable and lighter. Women who have PCOS or hormonal imbalances can benefit from taking Cilique.

You will notice improvement after 2–3 cycles of using it continuously. You can speak to your GP or pharmacist to confirm if it is suitable for you to manage irregular periods.

Yes, you can take Cilique to delay your period by skipping the 7-day break and starting the next strip straight away. This is a common and safe practice when using combined oral contraceptives like Cilique.

It’s helpful for holidays, special events, or if you suffer from heavy or painful periods. You may still experience breakthrough bleeding during the second strip. Speak to your healthcare provider before regularly using Cilique to delay periods.

Most women can tolerate Cilique over its extended use. Using Cilique may reduce the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers. It can help regulate periods, reduce acne, and ease menstrual cramps in the long term. However, using it long-term can slightly increase the risk of blood clots or breast cancer, but the risk is very small.

Cilique is not recommended during the early stages of breastfeeding, which is the first 6 weeks. The oestrogen component can reduce milk supply in some women.

If you wish to take the pill while breastfeeding, you could take a progestogen-only pill (POP or “mini-pill”). If you're past the early postpartum phase and your milk supply is established, a healthcare provider may approve Cilique.

If you are sick within 3 hours of taking Cilique, it may not have been fully absorbed into your system. You will need to take another pill as soon as possible. However, if you are still vomiting, use backup contraception for 7 days. This is because severe or prolonged vomiting can reduce the pill’s effectiveness in preventing pregnancy.

If you miss one pill, take it as soon as you remember, even if it means taking two pills in one day. However, if you miss two or more pills, follow the instructions in the patient leaflet – protection may be reduced.

Use additional contraception (like condoms) for the next 7 days if you've missed multiple pills. Missing pills increases the chance of pregnancy, especially if it happens at the beginning or end of a pack.
