People also ask

What is Constella?

Constella (Linaclotide) is a gastrointestinal medication that is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) syndrome with moderate to severe constipation in adults. IBS is a chronic disorder of intestinal function characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort, accompanied by swelling and changes in the gastrointestinal tract. The medication can only be dispensed with a prescription.

How does it work?

Known for being an excellent gastrointestinal treatment medication, Constella acts locally in the intestine, relieving pain and swelling and restoring normal bowel function. It is not absorbed by the body but binds to a receptor on the intestinal surface, called guanylate cyclase C. Linaclotide acts as a guanylate cyclase-C (GC-C) receptor agonist locally in the intestine since it is hardly absorbed into the systemic circulation and has two main effects. One is an analgesic by inhibiting the activity of localized pain receptors in the colon, resulting in decreased abdominal pain and swelling. The other mechanism of action is to accelerate the gastrointestinal transit by increasing the secretion of intestinal fluid, which manages to normalize the consistency of the faeces, increase the frequency of evacuations and decrease the degree of effort in the expulsion of faeces.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Constella (Linaclotide) is a medication specifically designed for the treatment of Irritable bowel syndrome that is related to the family of endogenous guanidine peptides. Both linaclotide and its active metabolite bind to the guanylate cyclase-C (GC-C) receptor, on the luminal surface of the intestinal epithelium. The action of linaclotide on the GC-C receptor has been shown to reduce visceral pain and intensify GI transit in animal models and increase colonic transit in humans. GC-C activation results in increased concentrations of cyclic guanosine monophosphate, both extracellularly and intracellularly.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Always use this IBS medication exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again. The recommended dose is one capsule (that is, 290 micrograms of linaclotide) by mouth once a day. The capsule should be taken at least 30 minutes before a meal. The doctor should periodically assess the need to continue treatment. The effectiveness of linaclotide was demonstrated in double-blind studies of up to six months and placebo-controlled. If patients have not experienced an improvement in symptoms after four weeks of treatment, it is recommended that they undergo a further examination and that reconsider the benefits and risks of continuing to administer the medication.
