Desmopressin Spray
This medicine is used for the treatment of nocturnal enuresis and, despite being an analogue of vasopressin, it does not act on V1 receptors, responsible for the vasoconstrictor action, therefore its effect on the vessels blood is practically negligible. Desmopressin Spray is administered in the sublingual cavity, under the tongue. During treatment with Desmopressin, you should regularly check your body weight, the level of sodium in your blood and/or blood pressure.

Desmopressin Spray is administered in the sublingual cavity, under the tongue. The active substance that makes the tablet work (the active substance) is desmopressin. Desmopressin is an antidiuretic, which reduces the amount of urine produced by the kidneys.
Desmopressin is a synthetic structural analogue of the pituitary hormone natural arginine-vasopressin. Desmopressin is distinguished from natural hormone by two chemical differences: deamination of cysteine and the replacement of 8-L-arginine by 8-D-arginine. This change considerably prolongs the antidiuretic effect and casielimina the pressor effect at therapeutic doses. Desmopressin is a very powerful agent with an EC50 of 1.6 pg/ml with an antidiuretic effect. The duration of the expected effect after oral administration is 6 to 14 hours or more.
Desmopressin is used to treat the frequent need to urinate at night in adults (nocturia). Because the spray is administered under the tongue it is often prescribed for patients with swallowing difficulties.
Follow the exact instructions for the administration of this medicine indicated by your doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again.
Treatment with Desmopressin for increased night time urination in adults (nocturia) should be initiated and controlled by specialists experienced in this treatment.
During treatment with Desmopressin, you should regularly check your body weight, the level of sodium in your blood and/or blood pressure.
Like all medicines, Desmopressin Spray can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Discontinue treatment and consult your doctor immediately if the following occurs
Symptoms resulting from fluid retention, such as unusual or prolonged headache, feeling or being sick, unexplained weight gain, and in severe cases, unconsciousness, seizures, allergic reactions such as rash, itching, fever, swelling of the mouth, tongue, or airways causing difficulty swallowing or breathing.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any of the following side effects:
Very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people): headache.
Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people): dry mouth, abdominal pain, feeling sick, dizziness, swelling of arms and legs, weight gain, increased urinary frequency.
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people): emotional disorders in children, allergic reactions.
Unknown the frequency cannot be estimated from the available data: accumulation of water in the body, low sodium levels
The feeling of thirst is automatically inhibited with an adequate treatment of desmopressin tablets. However, there is a potential risk for fluid retention, in severe cases, water poisoning (overhydration and hyponatremia) can occur if you drink heavily during treatment with desmopressin acetate tablets. Therefore, it is recommended that this danger be warned to patients, particularly the elderly and parents of young children.
Desmopressin treatment of nocturia due to nocturnal polyuria in adults should be initiated and controlled by specialists experienced in this treatment.
For the treatment of nocturnal enuresis and nocturia, fluid intake should be limited as much as possible from 1 hour before administration to bedtime until the following morning and in any case at least 8 hours after administration of desmopressin tablets. acetate. It is therefore recommended that the consumption during this period of liquids occurs exclusively due to the sensation of thirst. Treatment should be reviewed every three months to determine if there is still a need for treatment. This can be done by sandwiching for at least a week without medication. Desmopressin acetate cannot be given for eneures in children younger than 5 years and is not recommended for nocturia in patients older than 65 years.
