Zoely is a birth control pill that contains two active ingredients, nomegestrol acetate (a progestin) and estradiol (an estrogen). Estradiol is similar to the naturally produced hormone by the ovaries during the menstrual cycle. Nomegestrol acetate is derived from another hormone called progesterone, also produced by the ovaries during the cycle. One tablet is taken daily for the period that contraception is necessary, starting with one active tablet on the first day of the cycle. Zoely is sold in blister packs containing 28 tablets (24 white tablets followed by 4 yellow tablets) to be taken in order and identify with stickers to know the tablet that corresponds to each day of the week.

What is zoely?

Zoely is a medicine that comes in the form of 24 white “active” tablets containing the active substances nomegestrol acetate (2.5 mg) and estradiol (1.5 mg) and 4 “inactive” tablets (placebo) yellow in color that do not contain any active ingredient. This contraceptive pill is only available as a prescription medicine.

How does it work?

Cited for being one of the best contraceptive methods, Nomegestrol Acetate is a highly selective progestogen, derived from progesterone, a naturally occurring steroid hormone. Nomegestrol acetate has a strong affinity for the human progesterone receptor and antigonadotropic activity, an antiestrogenic activity, mediated by progesterone receptors, a moderate antiandrogenic activity, and is devoid of estrogen, androgen, glucocorticoid, or mineralocorticoid activity.

The estrogen that Zoely contains is 17β-estradiol, a natural estrogen identical to endogenous human 17β-estradiol. Zoely's contraceptive effect is based on the interaction of various factors, the most important of which is the inhibition of ovulation and changes in cervical secretion.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Zoely is a combined oral birth control pill. It is taken once a day and prevents pregnancy by supplementing the body's natural hormone levels of progesterone and estrogens, with artificial hormones called nomegestrol acetate and estradiol. By doing this, the ovulation process is avoided, and the probability of pregnancy is reduced.

How do I use it and its dosage?

The Zoely blister contains 28 tablets: 24 white tablets with active ingredients (numbers 1 to 24) and four yellow tablets without active ingredients (numbers 25 to 28).

Whenever you start a new Zoely blister, take the active white tablet, identified by the number 1, in the upper left corner. Choose from the seven stickers with the day indicators, the one in the gray column that begins with your start day. For example, if it starts on a Wednesday, use the days of the week sticker that says “WED”. Stick it on the blister pack, just above the row of white active tablets, where it says "Put the label for the day of the week here." This allows you to check if you took your daily tablet.

Take one tablet each day, at around the same time; if necessary, with a little water.

Follow the direction of the arrows on the blister pack, so use the white active tablets first, then the yellow placebo tablets.

Your period will start during the four days that you take the yellow placebo tablets (this period is called deprivation bleeding). It will usually start two to three days after the last active white tablet and may not have been completed before starting the next blister.

Start taking the next blister immediately after the last yellow tablet, even if your period is not over. This means that you will always start a new blister on the same day of the week, and also that you will have your period on approximately the same days, every month.

Some users may not have menstruation every month while taking yellow tablets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you can switch from another combined pill to Zoely without losing contraceptive protection. You can start taking Zoely the day after your last active pill from your current pack. However, if you are switching from a progestogen-only pill, you will need to use additional contraception for the first 7 days.

Some women have reported mood-related side effects, such as low mood, anxiety or mood swings while taking Zoely. These symptoms normally lessen after your body adjusts to the hormones, which typically occurs within the first few months.

If you experience emotional side effects that persist or worsen, you should speak to a healthcare professional about alternative contraceptive options. Zoely may also positively impact mood for some women by regulating hormone levels and menstrual symptoms. Your mental well-being should be monitored while taking hormonal contraception, especially if you have a history of depression.

Zoely is a combined contraceptive pill and may not be suitable for women who are over 35 and smoke. Smoking increases the risk of serious side effects such as blood clots, heart attacks or strokes. Your healthcare provider may recommend a progesterone-only pill or a non-hormonal pill. Always disclose your smoking status and age during your consultation to ensure safe prescribing.

Yes, it is common for some women not to have a withdrawal bleed during the yellow placebo tablet days while taking Zoely. Some women may skip periods or experience light bleeding – this is quite normal with this type of pill.

This does not indicate pregnancy if you have taken your pills correctly and have not missed any doses. If you are concerned about missed pills or potential pregnancy, you can take a test or speak to your healthcare provider.

Some women might experience mild fluid retention or increased appetite when starting Zoely. Clinical studies show that significant weight gain is uncommon and varies between individuals.

Any initial weight changes typically stabilise after the first few cycles of using Zoely. A balanced diet and regular physical activity can help manage any hormone-related weight fluctuations.

Yes, you can buy Zoely safely and legally through a GPhC-regulated UK online pharmacy such as Pharmacy Planet. You will need to complete a short online consultation, which is then reviewed by a prescriber. Once approved, the medication is delivered directly and discreetly to your address.
