What is Marvelon?
The Marvelon contraceptive pill is a preparation used for hormonal contraception, a so-called combined hormonal contraceptive (COC) or "combined pill". Each tablet contains a small amount of two different female sex hormones: desogestrel as a gestagen (corpus luteum hormone) and Ethinylestradiol as an estrogen. Given the low amounts of hormones, Marvelon falls into the category of low-dose oral contraceptives. Since all the tablets in the package contain the same hormones in the same dose, this is a single-phase oral contraceptive.
When used according to prescriptions, Marvelon offers protection against pregnancy on several levels: in general, it prevents the development of fertilizable eggs. In addition, the mucus from the cervix remains dense, making it difficult for the male semen to pass through. Also, the uterine lining is not prepared to accept a pregnancy. Hormonal changes induced by COCs can also make the cycle more regular and reduce the intensity and duration of menstruation. Marvelon can only be taken with a prescription.
How does it work?
Both act synergistically and decrease the hypothalamic secretion of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone, an action that inhibits ovulation because it interferes with the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and the secretion of pituitary gonadotropins. Progestin, in particular, suppresses the release of luteinizing hormone (LH), necessary for ovulation, and estrogen suppresses the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which prevents the selection and maturation of the dominant follicle. They also delay the maturation of the endometrium, which prevents implantation of the egg, and increase the viscosity of cervical mucus, slowing the progress of sperm. The combined effect of these actions determines their high contraceptive efficacy. In addition to avoiding pregnancy, regular use of contraceptives significantly reduces the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, endometrial cancer, and breast cancer. On the other hand, when they are used continuously they have an anti-endometriotic effect since they produce a pseudopregnancy state in which the uterine and ectopic endometrium suffer a decidual reaction, necrosis, and atrophy. Both drugs are well absorbed through the gastrointestinal mucosa and are widely distributed in the body. Ethinylestradiol binds remarkably to plasma proteins (95%) and desogestrel to albumin and globulin that binds sex hormones. Both products are metabolized in the liver; In the case of desogestrel, several active metabolites are produced, which are biotransformed and are eliminated, especially in urine and bile.
What are the benefits of taking it?
Marvelon medication is a contraceptive pill. This means that it contains two synthetic hormones that work together to prevent pregnancy. This treatment is also recommended to relieve symptoms of heavy bleeding periods. It is a simple treatment to take, one tablet a day, which is taken for 21 consecutive days within a period of four weeks.
How do I use it and its dosage?
Although no birth control pill guarantees 100% prevention of pregnancy, taking the Marvelon birth control pill according to your doctor's guidelines will help it work properly as the safest birth control option.

Marvelon is often prescribed for women who are starting hormonal contraception due to its low-dose formula. It helps regulate the menstrual cycle, reduce period pain, and manage heavy bleeding if you experience any.
If you are using this for the first time, you should consult with a healthcare professional to make sure it is the right option for you. It's important to review any medical history before starting Marvelon.
Marvelon may improve hormonal acne by regulating hormone levels in the body. Some women may notice clearer skin within a few cycles of starting the pill. However, results may vary, and this should not be the primary reason for starting Marvelon. If you are considering it for skin concerns, speak to your GP or consult an online pharmacist for more appropriate options.
Here are some tips:
- Take Marvelon at the same time every day to maintain hormone levels.
- Avoid missing doses and always start your new pack after the 7-day break.
- Limit smoking, especially if you are over 35, as it increases cardiovascular risks.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle and monitor for any side effects.
- Regular check-ins with your GP or online pharmacist can help track your overall health.
If you are sick within 3–4 hours of taking the pill, it may not have been absorbed into your system properly. Take another tablet as soon as possible from a spare strip. If you have diarrhoea for over 24 hours, the pill may not be absorbed effectively either; you will need to seek advice from your GP or online pharmacist.
If you start taking Marvelon on the first day of your period, it becomes effective straight away. If you start on any other day, you will need to use additional contraception such as condoms for the first seven days. After taking it consistently for seven days, it becomes fully effective. Make sure to always follow your prescriber’s guidance to ensure full contraceptive coverage.
Women with a history of blood clots, migraines, or certain cancers should not use Marvelon. It is also unsuitable for those with severe liver disease or uncontrolled high blood pressure. A full medical history is required before prescribing. Always disclose your current medications to your prescriber, as interactions may occur.
