About Mounjaro
Mounjaro is an injectable medication, licensed to aid with diabetes type 2. However, this particular medicine has been found to show effective weight loss results in tandem with helping diabetic patients. Mounjaro is manufactured by the company Eli Lilly and is made up of the active ingredient Tirzepatide, a GLP-1 agonist. Sound familiar? That's because it is part of the same family as esteemed weight loss medicines such as Wegovy (made of Semaglutide) and Saxenda (made of Liraglutide). Learn more about Mounjaro below!
What is Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is the main component in Mounjaro, and as well as being a glucagon-like-peptide-1 agonist. it is also a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polupeptide (GIP). These both play important roles in regulation your metabolism and blood sugar levels, making it suitable for both type 2 diabetes and obesity. Tirzepatide stimulates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps to lower blood sugar levels, increase insulin production, reduce appetite and, in turn, promote weight loss.
Is Mounjaro licensed for weight loss?
Mounjaro is currently only licensed for treatment of diabetes in the UK, however, it has been prescribed "off-license" for obesity and weight loss management under appropriate guidance. While, Mounjaro may not be licensed for treating obesity, that doesn't mean that the drug Tirzepatide itself is going to be exclusively for diabetics. As we have seen with similar medicines for diabetes that have shown encouraging results for weight loss, we may see a future version of Tirzepatide that is specifically licensed for weight loss and the effects of obesity.
How can I get the most out of Mounjaro?
Like Mounjaro's fellow GLP-1 agonist medicines, it is extremely important to remember that weight loss cannot be achieved to its full extent without implementing a better lifestyle. Think of this as a triangle comprised of three points of equal importance. On one corner, you have Mounjaro - an appetite suppressant that should help you feel fuller for longer and will kickstart your weight loss process. Then, you should also be implementing a healthy diet and a regular exercise regime. Remember, Mounjaro and all other weight loss medication is for weight loss management -- meaning that once you come off of this medication, it is incredibly important to keep the healthy habits learned on your journey. A lifestyle change as simple as eating more greens and taking a brief walk a day while on Mounjaro can help you see clearer results that you can be proud of.
How do I know if Tirzepatide is right for me?
With all weight loss medication issued from Pharmacy Planet, there is certain criteria required for safe supply of Mounjaro/Tirzepatide. It is suitable for patients who have a BMI of 30 or over, or over 28 if there are certain health issues that affect weight gain. There are certain health conditions that weight loss is not recommended for, such as pancreatitis. We recommend that you discuss this with your clinician or GP to see what weight loss medication is right for you.
What is the difference between Mounjaro and Wegovy?
Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and Semaglutide (Wegovy) are medications used for type 2 diabetes and obesity. Tirzepatide works by stimulating GIP and GLP-1 receptors, while semaglutide primarily activates GLP-1 receptors. Mounjaro, created by Eli Lilly, is currently licensed for treatment of diabetes, but can be prescribed off-license for weight loss. Whereas Wegovy, made by NovoNordisk, is officially licensed for treating weight loss using the same active ingredient (Semaglutide) that has been used in their previous diabetes/weight loss medicine, Wegovy. Both are administered via once-weekly injections and can lead to weight loss. They may have similar side effects, such as gastrointestinal symptoms. The choice between them depends on an individual's specific medical needs and goals, guided by their healthcare provider.
