Each year on the 10th September, people around the world gather to raise awareness about suicide prevention. By raising awareness, we are reducing the stigma around suicide.

By asking someone if they are suicidal, you will not be making things worse, there is evidence that shows that you could be protecting them. By asking them the question, you are allowing them to open up and have permission to tell you how they feel.

If someone does let you know that they are having suicidal thoughts, we recommend that you take them seriously. Just being there, showing them that you care and are listening allows them to know that you can help them work through what is going on.

‘Creating hope through action’ has been the running theme for World Suicide Prevention Day from 2021 – 2023. By creating hope through action, we are showing people who are experiencing these thoughts that there is hope. It shows we care and we want to support them.

If you need to speak to someone, call Samaritans on 116 123.
