Qvar is an inhalation medication with corticosteroids (hormones of the adrenal cortex). The agent has an anti-inflammatory effect and ensures that the airways are less sensitive to stimuli. Qvar is prescribed to treat asthma and COPD to prevent shortness of breath attacks. The active ingredient in Qvar reaches your lungs when you take a train. Qvar inhalations should be spread evenly throughout the day. Rinse your mouth well after giving this medicine. Your doctor will prescribe the dose you should take depending on the severity of the symptoms.

What is Qvar?

Qvar contains as active ingredient beclomethasone dipropionate, which belongs to the group of medicines called corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are used for the treatment of asthma since they have, among others, an anti-inflammatory action. They reduce the swelling and irritation in the walls of the small ducts through which air circulates in the lungs and thus facilitate breathing. Qvar is used to prevent asthma symptoms in people who need regular treatment. Corticosteroids also help prevent asthma attacks.

How does Qvar work?

The active substance in Qvar is a corticosteroid, called beclomethasone dipropionate, which acts as a preventive. It reduces inflammation by restricting the action of chemicals released by the immune system, in reaction to irritants. These chemicals can lead to inflammation and contraction of the muscle walls in the airways, thereby reducing breathing capacity.

By inhibiting its ability, Qvar facilitates breathing and limits the development of mucus that causes obstruction in the respiratory tract.

What are the benefits of using Qvar?

Qvar is a preventive treatment for asthma, manufactured by Teva. It comes in an inhaler format, which is applied twice a day. Your doctor will prescribe the dose you should take depending on the severity of the symptoms.

How do I use Qvar and its dosage?

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again.

Remember to use your medicine.

Qvar should only be used by inhalation.

Your doctor will indicate the duration of your treatment with Qvar. Do not stop treatment earlier, even if you feel better unless your doctor tells you to or if your breathing worsens when you take the medicine. The usual recommended doses are as follows:

-Adults and children over 12 years:

The starting Qvar dosage for mild or moderate asthma is one inhalation (100 micrograms) twice a day. This dose can be increased to two inhalations (200 micrograms) twice a day.

For more severe asthma, your doctor may recommend up to four inhalations (400 micrograms) twice a day.

The maximum recommended dose is 800 micrograms a day.

-Children from 6 to 11 years old:

The dose must be established by the doctor and depending on the individual response of each patient. In general, half the recommended doses for adults are recommended (maximum 400 micrograms per day in two divided doses). Children should receive an initial dose of Qvar appropriate to the severity of their illness. The dose can then be adjusted until adequate control is achieved or reduced to the lowest effective dose based on individual response.

If you start using Qvar instead of, or at the same time as, oral steroids, you must carry a notice card that you are taking steroids until your doctor tells you that you no longer need it.

If you have difficulties or do not understand the instructions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

It may take several days before you notice the benefits of the medicine. It is very important that you use it regularly every day. Do not stop treatment even if you feel better unless your doctor tells you to, or you notice that your breathing worsens when you take the medicine.

Do not use this medication to treat a sudden attack of respiratory distress, it will not help. You will need a different kind of medicine.

Qvar is administered by inhalation. The correct handling of this medicine is decisive for the success of the treatment.

Before each application, the following guidelines will be observed:

  1. Remove the protective cover. If it is a new inhaler or it has not been used for a week, shake the container and press twice to ensure the proper functioning of the inhaler. If the inhaler is used regularly go to the following instructions:
  2. Shake the inhaler
  3. Remove as much air as possible from your lungs.
  4. Adapt the inhaler to your mouth according to the position indicated in the drawing.
  5. Take a deep breath as possible. You must press, according to the arrows in the drawing, the device while you are doing this inspiration.
  6. Take the inhaler out of your mouth and try to hold the air in your lungs for a few seconds and breathe out slowly.
  7. The plastic nozzle should be washed regularly. To do this, remove it from the spray and rinse it with plenty of water at least once a week. Before use, it must be dry. Do not wet the metal cartridge.
  8. Store with the protective cover in place to protect it from dust and dirt.
  9. It is recommended to rinse your mouth with water after each inhalation.

If you think that the action of Qvar is too strong or weak, please inform your doctor or pharmacist.

What are the Side effects & precautions of Qvar?

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you cannot use Qvar as a reliever inhaler, as it will not provide relief from asthma symptoms that arise suddenly. Qvar is a preventer inhaler, which means that it helps manage asthma over time with consistent use. This inhaler reduces inflammation of the airways, but this is not immediate and can take a few days or even a few weeks to experience the full effects of Qvar. For quick symptom relief, you should always carry a rescue inhaler, such as Ventolin.

The Qvar inhaler can take anywhere between a few days to a few weeks to show noticeable improvements in respiratory function. It is essential to use this medication regularly as your clinician has prescribed, even if you feel that your symptoms have improved.

Though Qvar is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, you may be able to purchase it online through licensed UK pharmacies if it has been previously prescribed by your GP.

If you forget to take a dose of Qvar, don’t panic; you can take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to your next dose, then you can skip the one you missed and continue as normal. Do not take a double dose under any circumstances. Try to set up a daily reminder for the same time each day so you can take your Qvar inhaler consistently to support your respiratory health.

If you are pregnant, thinking of getting pregnant, or breastfeeding, it is best to inform your healthcare provider before using Qvar in case of any possible circumstances where this treatment cannot be used. However, in many cases, inhaled corticosteroids are considered relatively safe to use during these circumstances, as they have low systemic absorption, meaning they are unlikely to be absorbed into breast milk. For further advice, get in touch with your GP or our clinical team for the best way forward.

Yes, Qvar can be used by children aged 6 and older, but the dosage is usually much lower than for adults. When using inhalers like Qvar, children should always be under the supervision of a responsible adult to monitor for any side effects. Long-term use has the potential to affect growth in children, so make sure you are organising regular check-ups with your GP or clinician.
