Valupak Vitamin B6 10mg Tablets | Pyridoxine Supplement for Energy Metabolism & Nervous System Health

Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is an essential water-soluble B vitamin involved in over 100 enzyme reactions in the human body. It plays a particularly important role in protein metabolism, nervous system function, and the formation of neurotransmitters. Valupak Vitamin B6 10 mg tablets provide a daily dose of pyridoxine at the upper boundary of the safe supplemental range for unsupervised use. Vitamin B6 contributes to normal protein metabolism, normal function of the nervous system, and normal psychological function. It is available without a prescription, but the MHRA advises that doses above 10 mg per day should not be taken long term without medical supervision. Read the dosage and safety sections of this page carefully before purchasing.

MHRA GUIDANCE ON VITAMIN B6: The MHRA advises that vitamin B6 supplements should not be taken at doses above 10 mg per day without medical supervision. Long term use of vitamin B6 above 10 mg per day is associated with a risk of peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage causing tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands and feet). This product provides exactly 10 mg per tablet. Do not take more than one tablet per day and do not combine with other supplements containing vitamin B6 without checking the combined total daily dose.

What Is Valupak Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)?

Valupak Vitamin B6 tablets contain pyridoxine hydrochloride, the most commonly used supplemental form of vitamin B6. Each tablet provides 10 mg of vitamin B6, which is 714 percent of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) of 1.4 mg per day. The 10 mg dose is therefore significantly above the amount needed to meet the NRV, but is at the threshold identified by the MHRA as the upper limit for unsupervised supplementation.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is one of the eight B vitamins. It is found naturally in a wide range of foods including meat, fish, potatoes, starchy vegetables, and non citrus fruits. Most adults in the UK obtain sufficient vitamin B6 from their diet. The NRV for adults is 1.4 mg per day. A typical varied diet provides around 1.5 to 2 mg per day. Standard 10 mg supplement tablets therefore provide a dose well above everyday dietary needs.

People who take a standalone high-dose B6 supplement may do so for specific reasons including support for nervous system function, as part of a supplement routine recommended by a healthcare professional, or for particular life stages. Whatever the reason, it is important to stay within the recommended dose and to be aware of the MHRA guidance on long-term use at this level.

How Does Vitamin B6 Work?

Vitamin B6 functions primarily as a coenzyme in the form of pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP), the active form to which pyridoxine is converted in the body. PLP participates in over 100 enzyme reactions, making B6 one of the most widely involved vitamins in human metabolism.

Protein and Amino Acid Metabolism

Vitamin B6 contributes to normal protein and glycogen metabolism. PLP is essential for the transamination, deamination, and decarboxylation of amino acids, the processes by which the body synthesises, interconverts, and breaks down proteins. This makes B6 particularly important for people with high protein intakes or those who exercise regularly, as protein metabolism increases with physical activity and muscle repair.

Nervous System and Neurotransmitter Synthesis

Vitamin B6 contributes to the normal function of the nervous system. PLP is a required coenzyme in the synthesis of several key neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and noradrenaline. These neurotransmitters regulate mood, sleep, and neurological signalling. The role of B6 in neurotransmitter synthesis underpins its association with psychological function and nerve health.

Psychological Function and Immune Support

Vitamin B6 contributes to normal psychological function, reflecting its role in neurotransmitter synthesis and neurological health. It also contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the regulation of hormonal activity. B6 is involved in the production of haemoglobin and contributes to normal red blood cell formation. It also contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue as part of normal energy metabolism.

How to Take Valupak Vitamin B6 Tablets

Always follow the dosage instructions on the product label. Given the MHRA guidance on B6, it is particularly important not to exceed the stated dose.

  • Take one tablet daily. This provides exactly 10 mg of vitamin B6.
  • Do not take more than one tablet per day. The MHRA advises that vitamin B6 supplements should not exceed 10 mg per day without medical supervision.
  • Tablets can be taken with or without food.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
  • Take at the same time each day as part of your daily routine.
  • Before taking this supplement, check whether any other supplements you take (including multivitamins and B complex products) contain vitamin B6. Add up the total daily vitamin B6 from all sources. The combined total should not exceed 10 mg per day from supplements.
  • Do not take this supplement indefinitely without review. If you have been taking B6 supplements for several months, consider speaking to your GP or pharmacist about whether continued supplementation is appropriate for you.
  • If you experience any tingling, numbness, or pain in your hands or feet while taking vitamin B6 supplements, stop taking them and speak to your GP promptly. These can be early signs of peripheral neuropathy.

Dosage Available

Valupak Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) 10 mg Tablets

Each tablet provides 10 mg of pyridoxine hydrochloride. This is 714 percent of the adult NRV of 1.4 mg per day. The pack contains 60 tablets, providing a 60-day supply at one tablet per day.

The 10 mg dose is the upper limit the MHRA considers acceptable for unsupervised supplemental use. Doses above this level should not be taken without medical advice. The MHRA updated its guidance on vitamin B6 in 2023 following reports of peripheral neuropathy associated with long-term use of doses above 10 mg per day. Although the risk is primarily associated with doses significantly above 10 mg per day, the guidance exists to protect people who may combine multiple supplements containing B6 or who take the supplement for very prolonged periods.

Side Effects and Safety Information

Vitamin B6 at 10 mg per day is generally safe for most adults when taken as directed and not combined with other sources of B6. The primary safety concern is peripheral neuropathy from long term use at higher doses.

Peripheral Neuropathy Risk

Peripheral neuropathy is the most serious adverse effect associated with vitamin B6 supplementation. It typically develops from long term use at doses significantly above 10 mg per day, though individual susceptibility varies. Symptoms include tingling, numbness, burning, or pain in the hands and feet, sometimes affecting balance and coordination. These symptoms may be reversible on stopping supplementation, particularly if caught early, but in some cases neurological changes can persist.

The risk at exactly 10 mg per day is considered low for most people, particularly with short to medium term use. The risk increases with higher doses and with longer duration of use. Do not exceed the stated dose and do not continue indefinitely without periodic review.

Other Possible Side Effects

  • Nausea or stomach discomfort, particularly if taken on an empty stomach.
  • Headache, reported occasionally at higher doses.

Stop Taking and Seek Medical Advice If You Experience:

  • Tingling, numbness, or burning sensations in the hands, feet, or other extremities.
  • Loss of coordination or balance problems.
  • Sensitivity to touch in the hands or feet.

These symptoms may indicate peripheral neuropathy and should be assessed by a GP promptly.

Who Can Take Valupak Vitamin B6?

This Supplement May Be Suitable For:

  • Adults who have been advised by a healthcare professional to take a vitamin B6 supplement.
  • Adults who wish to ensure adequate B6 intake as part of a daily supplement routine and understand the dosing guidance.
  • Adults who do not take any other supplements containing vitamin B6, so the combined daily intake remains at or below 10 mg.

Exercise Caution or Speak to Your GP If You:

  • Take any other supplement containing vitamin B6, including a multivitamin or B complex. Check and add up your total daily B6 from all sources before taking this tablet.
  • Have been taking B6 supplements at 10 mg or above for more than a few months. Speak to your GP about whether continued use is appropriate.
  • Experience any tingling, numbness, or unusual sensations in your hands or feet while taking this supplement. Stop and see your GP.
  • Take levodopa for Parkinson's disease. Vitamin B6 can reduce the effectiveness of levodopa when taken without a dopa decarboxylase inhibitor. Speak to your GP before taking B6 supplements.
  • Take phenytoin or phenobarbitone for epilepsy. B6 may affect blood levels of these medicines. Speak to your GP.
  • Are pregnant. While B6 is needed during pregnancy, the appropriate dose should be confirmed with your midwife or GP. Routine supplementation at 10 mg per day is not recommended during pregnancy without medical guidance.

Interactions and Cautions

Key interactions and cautions for Valupak Vitamin B6 10 mg:

  • Levodopa (without dopa decarboxylase inhibitor): vitamin B6 reduces the effectiveness of levodopa. Do not take B6 supplements if you take levodopa alone. If you take levodopa combined with carbidopa or benserazide, the interaction is less significant but speak to your GP.
  • Phenytoin and phenobarbitone: B6 may affect blood levels of these antiepileptic medicines. Speak to your GP before starting B6 supplements.
  • Combined B6 from multiple supplements: always check the B6 content of all supplements taken. Total combined daily B6 from supplements should not exceed 10 mg without medical supervision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) contributes to several important body functions. These include: normal protein and glycogen metabolism; normal function of the nervous system; normal psychological function; the normal function of the immune system; normal red blood cell formation; regulation of hormonal activity; and reduction of tiredness and fatigue. These are all EFSA-authorised health claims for vitamin B6. It acts primarily as a coenzyme in over 100 enzyme reactions, making it one of the most widely involved vitamins in human metabolism.

At 10 mg per day, vitamin B6 is generally considered safe for most adults for short to medium term use. The MHRA issued guidance in 2023 stating that B6 supplements should not be taken above 10 mg per day without medical supervision. The 10 mg dose is the threshold the MHRA considers acceptable for unsupervised use. The primary risk is peripheral neuropathy, which is more commonly associated with doses significantly above 10 mg taken long term. To stay safe, do not exceed one tablet per day, do not combine with other B6-containing supplements, and do not take indefinitely without periodic review.

Yes, at high doses taken long term. Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) is the most serious adverse effect associated with vitamin B6 supplementation and is most commonly linked to doses above 50 to 100 mg per day taken for extended periods. The risk at 10 mg per day is considered low, but the MHRA updated its guidance in 2023 because some cases of neuropathy have been reported at lower doses in people who were highly sensitive or combining multiple supplements. If you experience tingling, numbness, or burning in your hands or feet, stop taking the supplement and see your GP.

Vitamin B6 is found in a wide range of everyday foods. Good sources include chicken, turkey, beef, pork, and tuna. Plant-based sources include chickpeas, potatoes, bananas, avocados, and fortified breakfast cereals. Sunflower seeds and pistachio nuts are also relatively rich in B6. Most adults in the UK obtain sufficient vitamin B6 from a varied diet. The Nutrient Reference Value for adults is 1.4 mg per day, which is typically met through normal dietary intake without supplementation.

With caution. Before taking a standalone 10 mg B6 tablet, check whether any other supplements you take also contain vitamin B6. These include multivitamins, B complex tablets, and some specialist supplements. Add up the total daily vitamin B6 from all sources. The combined total should not exceed 10 mg per day from supplements without medical supervision. Taking this tablet alongside a multivitamin or B complex that already contains B6 could push your total above the MHRA threshold. Check all supplement labels before combining.

Vitamin B6 has been studied in relation to nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, and some evidence suggests it may provide modest benefit. However, this is not an EFSA-authorised health claim, and the appropriate dose and formulation for use in pregnancy should be discussed with your midwife or GP. Routine supplementation at 10 mg per day is not recommended during pregnancy without medical guidance. Do not self-prescribe B6 supplements for pregnancy-related nausea without speaking to your healthcare team first.

Pyridoxine is one of three naturally occurring forms of vitamin B6, the others being pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. All three forms are converted in the body to the active coenzyme form pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP). Pyridoxine hydrochloride is the form most commonly used in food supplements due to its stability and cost-effectiveness. When a supplement label states "vitamin B6 as pyridoxine hydrochloride", this means the vitamin B6 is provided in the pyridoxine form. The body converts it to PLP, which is the form that participates in enzyme reactions. All three forms are effective sources of vitamin B6.

The MHRA advises that vitamin B6 supplements above 10 mg per day should not be taken long term without medical supervision. For supplements at exactly 10 mg per day, the guidance implies caution around prolonged unsupervised use. If you have been taking a 10 mg B6 supplement for several months, it is sensible to review whether ongoing supplementation is necessary with your GP or pharmacist. Most adults obtain adequate B6 from a varied diet and do not need ongoing supplementation. If you are taking B6 for a specific health reason, speak to your GP about the appropriate duration.
