About Xyzal/Levocetirizine Tablets
Xyzal is an antihistamine tablet used to treat the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and urticaria (hives). Each tablet contains 5mg of the antihistamine levocetirizine dihydrochloride, which eases symptoms, such as sneezing, congestion, runny nose, and inflamed eyes.
Xyzal is safe for both adults and children. Children over the age of 2 can use Xyzal for allergic rhinitis; children who are over six months old can use Xyzal to treat hives.
Xyzal can be taken alongside a nasal spray and eye drops for allergy symptoms.
Levocetirizine is used to reduce the symptoms of a runny nose, sneezing and redness, itching, and watery eyes caused by hay fever from allergies and seasonal allergies to allergens like dust mites, animal dander, and molds. It can also be used to treat symptoms of hives, itching, and included skin rashes. Levocetirizine is usually given by mouth as a tablet to take once a day in the afternoon.
Functioning as an allergy treatment, Levocetirizine (R-cetirizine) is the active enantiomer of cetirizine, a second-generation antagonist of H1 receptors, it is the first antihistamine that is not a metabolite.
In vitro pharmacodynamic studies show that most of the antihistamine action of cetirizine is due to levocetirizine, so both compounds produce the same effect, using different doses. It is rapidly absorbed orally. The establishment of the answer appears after 1 hour, remaining for 24 h. Its hepatic metabolism is minimal, so most of the dose is excreted unchanged in the urine. Its plasma elimination half-life is 7 hours after administration of a single dose.
Levocetirizine dihydrochloride is the active substance in Levocetirizine 5 mg film-coated tablets EFG. Levocetirizine is an antiallergic medicine. Being one the known best allergy tablets, Levocetirizine Xyzal is used to treat signs of illness (symptoms) associated with:
- allergic rhinitis (including persistent allergic rhinitis)
- urticaria
Antihistamines such as levocetirizine alleviate the discomfort associated with the conditions described above, such as sneezing, irritation, runny nose and congestion, itching, redness of the eyes with tearing, and skin rash.
Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again. The recommended levocetirizine xyzal dosage is as follows:
Adults and children 6 years and older
The recommended dose for adults and children from 6 years is one tablet per day.
Special instructions for dosing in specific populations:
Kidney and liver failure
Levocetirizine should not be taken by patients who have severe renal impairment (severe renal impairment with creatinine clearance less than 10 ml/min).
Patients with liver and kidney failure should take a lower dose depending on the severity of their kidney disease, and in children, the dose will be based on body weight; the dose to take will be determined by your doctor.
Patients with liver failure only should take the normal prescription dose.
Patients from 65 years of age
In elderly patients, no dosage adjustment is necessary if their renal function is normal.
Use in children
Levocetirizine is not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age.
The tablets are to be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food. In addition, the duration of the treatment depends on the type, duration, and course of the symptoms and it is your doctor who must determine it.
Like all medicines, this medicine can have side effects, although not everybody gets them.
