Know About the Types of Hypertension
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, occurs when the force of blood against your artery walls is stronger than it should be. Left untreated, it can grow strong enough to cause health conditions like heart disease.
Your blood pressure levels are determined by how much blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance is faces when travelling in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries are, the higher your blood pressure will be.
Also known as primary hypertension, essential hypertension is high blood pressure that does not have a known cause. It often presents with no symptoms and is diagnosed when high blood pressure readings are taken as part of a health screening.
Risk factors for essential hypertension include:
- A family history of hypertension
- Drinking alcohol
- High sodium diets
- Lack of exercise
Treatment for essential hypertension is often a combination of lifestyle changes and medication. You’ll need to exercise more, eat better, and cutting out nicotine and tobacco. Medications you may be prescribed include angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, or diuretics.
Secondary hypertension is high blood pressure that has a known cause, such as kidney disease or an endocrine disorders like hyperthyroidism. Some medications and substances like nicotine and alcohol can also cause secondary hypertension.
Other risks of secondary hypertension include:
- Hormonal contraceptives
- Sleep apnea
- Potassium deficiency
- Kidney cancer
- Steroid use
The first step in treatment for secondary hypertension will be to treat the underlying condition causing it. Lifestyle changes can also help, especially if your lifestyle is a contributing factor to your hypertension. You may also be prescribed medications similar to those used to treat primary hypertension.
High Blood Pressure Medication
- Accupro is an ACE inhibitor that can regulate blood pressure by widening the blood vessels in the body, making it easier for blood to flow and easing the strain on your heart.
- Accuretic Tablets contain two compounds, Quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide. Quinapril is an ACE inhibitor that will relax and widen your blood pressure while hydrochlorothiazide is a diueretic that will decrease fluid build up in the body and lower blood pressure.
