What is Edarbi?
Edarbi is a blood pressure medication that contains an active substance called azilsartan medoxomil and belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists (ARAII). Angiotensin II is a substance that occurs naturally in the body and causes contraction of blood vessels, thus increasing blood pressure. Edarbi blocks this effect so that the blood vessels relax, which helps reduce blood pressure.
How does it work?
Edarbis a prodrug that hydrolyzes to azilsartan in the gastrointestinal tract during absorption. It is a selective antagonist of the angiotensin II receptor of the AT1 subtype. Chlorthalidone is a monosulfonamilic diuretic similar to a thiazide, which differs chemically from thiazide diuretics due to the lack of benzothiadiazole structure. They act on two separate mechanisms that participate in the regulation of blood pressure. Specifically, azilsartan medoxomil blocks the vasoconstriction and sodium retention effects of angiotensin II in vascular and cardiac smooth muscle and in adrenal and renal cells, and chlorthalidone produces diuresis with increased excretion of sodium and chlorides in the cortical segment. dilution of the ascending branch of the Henle loop of the nephron.
What are the benefits of taking it?
Edarbi uses include being utilsed to treat high blood pressure (essential hypertension) in adult patients (over 18 years old). A reduction in blood pressure should be observed within 2 weeks of starting treatment and a full effect of the dose will be observed before 4 weeks have elapsed.
How do I use it and its dosage?
Always take the Edarbi blood pressure medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist again. It is important to continue taking Edarbi everyday at the same time. Edarbi is for oral use. Take the tablet with plenty of water. You can take this medicine with or without food.
- The usual Edarbi dosage is 40 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase this dose to a maximum of 80 mg once a day depending on the response of blood
- In very elderly patients, for example (over 75 years), your doctor may recommend a lower starting dose of 20 mg once a
- If you have mild or moderate liver disease, your doctor may recommend a lower starting dose of 20 mg once a
- In patients who have recently lost body fluid, e.g. ex. Due to vomiting or diarrhea, or taking diuretics, your doctor may recommend a lower starting dose of 20 mg once a
- If you suffer from any other concomitant disease, such as kidney disease or heart failure, your doctor will decide which is the most suitable starting dose.

Uncommon side effects) may affect up to 1 in 100 people):
- Low blood pressure, which can make you feel weak or dizzy
- Feeling tired
- Inflammation of the hands, ankles or feet (peripheral edema)
- Skin rash, itching
- Nausea
- Muscle spasms
- Increased serum creatinine in the blood (an indicator of kidney function)
- Increased uric acid in the blood
Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):
- Changes in blood test results, including decreased levels of a protein in red blood cells (hemoglobin).
- When Edarbi is taken with chlorthalidone (a diuretic), higher levels of certain chemicals in the blood (such as creatinine), which are indicators of kidney function, have been observed frequently (in less than 1 in 10 users). and low blood pressure is also common
- Swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet is more common (in less than 1 in 10 users) when taking Edarbi with amlodipine (a calcium channel blocker to treat hypotension) than when taking Edarbi alone (less than 1 in 100 users). The frequency of this effect is greater when taking amlodipine alone.

How effective is Edarbi?
In a study, it was found that taking 80 mg of Edarbi was more effective in lowering blood pressure than taking the approved dose of 320 mg valsartan and 40 mg of omelsaran. It was also found that using Edarbi 40 mg and 80 mg was more effective than ramipril 10 mg. When Edarbi is taken along with other medicines, it can result in greater blood pressure reduction than when these medications are used alone.
Who should not take Edarbi?
You should not take Edarbi tablets if you are:
- Pregnant
- Allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine
- Diabetic or have impaired kidney function and are taking medicines containing aliskiren

- Taking ACE inhibitors or other high blood pressure medications
- Diagnosed with hyperaldosteronism or have high potassium levels

It usually takes up to two weeks to see an improvement in your blood pressure levels. You must continue the medication as prescribed by your healthcare professional and should not stop taking it even if you feel no symptoms.
Each Edarbi tablet contains azilsartan medoxomil, mannitol, fumaric acid, sodium hydroxide, hydroxypropylcellulose, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate.
You must avoid taking potassium-rich foods or potassium supplements, salt substitutes, alcohol, etc. It is advisable to discuss with your healthcare provider about specific restrictions on foods, medications, supplements, and drinks while using Edarbi.
In adults, the usual starting dosage is 40 mg, taken once daily. This dosage may be increased to 80 mg if blood pressure levels are not adequately controlled as expected. Additional medications such as diuretics or calcium channel blockers may be prescribed if Edarbi alone is insufficient in managing hypertension.
Edarbi may affect kidney function. If you experience any symptoms such as reduced urination, tiredness, nausea, confusion, seizures, or swelling in the feet, ankles, or legs, then report them to your healthcare professional immediately.
Store Edarbi tablets in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Use the medicine before the expiry date and keep it out of reach of children.
