Doxazosin Tablets

Doxazosin is an alpha-adrenergic blocker. It works by relaxing the veins and arteries, allowing blood to pass more easily. It also relaxes the muscles in the prostate and the neck of the bladder, making it easier to urinate. Doxazosin is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) or to help men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an enlarged prostate. The long-acting form of doxazosin (Cardura XL) is intended only for the treatment of BPH and should not be used to treat hypertension. Doxazosin is available in strengths of 1 mg, 2 mg, and 4 mg. You can order Doxazosin tablets from Pharmacy Planet for discreet and fast delivery.

What is Doxazosin?

Doxazosin is a drug indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Doxazosin can be used in patients with BPH, whether they are hypertensive or normotensive. While changes in blood pressure in normotensive patients with BPH are clinically insignificant, patients who meet both conditions, HBP and BPH, can be effectively treated.

How does it work?

Doxazosin exerts its vasodilatory effect, by means of the selective and competitive blocking of postsynaptic alpha-1 adrenoceptors. Doxazosin administration causes a clinically significant reduction in blood pressure as a result of a decrease in systemic vascular resistance. This effect is thought to be the result of selective blocking of alpha-1 adrenoceptors located in the vasculature.

With a daily dose, a clinically significant decrease in blood pressure is present throughout the day for up to 24 hours after the last dose. The reduction in blood pressure appears gradually, reaching a maximum reduction of 2-6 hours after administration. In patients with hypertension, blood pressure during treatment with doxazosin was similar, both supine and sitting, unlike treatment with non-selective blocking agents of alpha adrenoceptors.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Doxazosin uses include being indicated in the treatment of hypertension and can be used as initial therapy to control blood pressure in most patients. In patients who are not adequately controlled with a single antihypertensive drug, doxazosin can be used alone or in combination with a thiazide diuretic, a beta-blocker, a calcium antagonist, or an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor

How do I use it and its dosage?

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

This treatment has been indicated by your doctor specifically for you and your process. The dose will be established by the doctor depending on the needs of each patient. Depending on the individual response, the doctor may modify the doxazosin dosage. Faithfully follow your doctor's instructions regarding dosage and how to use it. Doxazosin can be administered both in the morning and at night.

Arterial hypertension

Doxazosin is administered orally. The usual dose is 2-4 mg once a day. It is recommended to start treatment with the administration of 1 mg once a day, for 1 or 2 weeks. Depending on the response of each patient, the dose can be increased to 2 mg, 4 mg, 8 mg or 16 mg daily as a maximum dose, at intervals of 1 or 2 weeks between them, until the desired reduction in the patient's blood pressure is achieved.

Doxazosin can be taken with other medications that your doctor has prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia

Doxazosin is administered orally. The usual dose is 2-4 mg once a day. It is recommended to start treatment with the administration of 1 mg once a day. Depending on the response of each patient, the dose can be increased to 2 mg, 4 mg or 8 mg daily as the maximum dose

Side effects & precautions

Like all medicines, these blood pressure tablets can have side effects, although not everyone gets them.

What is the difference between Diltiazem cream and Diltiazem tablets?

Some medications may interact with Doxazosin, potentially reducing its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. The medicines listed below should be used with caution:

  • ED medications such asViagra (sildenafil),tadalafil,or vardenafil
  • Other high blood pressure medications
  • Certain antidepressants, nitrates-containing medicines, and muscle relaxants like baclofen
  • Medicines for Parkinson's disease (e.g.co-careldopa) and fungal infections (e.g. ketoconazole)
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such asibuprofen
There is insufficient data to determine whether herbal remedies or supplements are safe to take alongside Doxazosin. You should speak with your healthcare provider, who can offer appropriate medical guidance.

Who should not take Diltiazem?

Doxazosin tablets contain doxazosin mesylate, which is also the key ingredient in Cardura XL. It is an alpha-blocker that helps to relax the smooth muscles of the bladder neck and prostate. It is effective in treating high blood pressure and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Frequently Asked Questions

Doxazosin helps in managing high blood pressure and BPH, which can indirectly affect erectile function. However, it is not intended to treat erectile dysfunction. Viagra is a medication specifically designed to treat erectile dysfunction in men.

If you are above 65, it is advisable to speak with your healthcare professional before using Doxazosin. It may not always be the safest option for treating high blood pressure in older adults. Your healthcare professional may recommend alternative treatments based on your medical condition.

While Doxazosin is generally safe for most individuals, it may not be suitable for everyone. You should consult your healthcare provider if you:

  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Doxazosin
  • Are pregnant, planning for pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • Have hypotension or orthostatic hypotension
  • Have an enlarged prostate gland
  • Are getting any cataract surgery

Yes, some individuals may experience insomnia as a side effect of Doxazosin. It is advisable to consult your healthcare professional, who may adjust your dosage or suggest a different alpha-blocker medication that would prevent causing sleep problems.

In case of hypertension, usually the lowest dosage is given and maintained for the first two weeks. If the condition is not improving as expected, then Doxazosin 2mg may be given for the next few weeks for better results. For Benign prostate hyperplasia, Doxazosin 2 mg is generally suggested in the second week, i.e. between the 9th to 14th day of treatment. You should only take Doxazosin 2 mg if it has been prescribed by your healthcare professional, based on factors such as the severity of your condition and overall health.

Alcohol consumption can further lower your blood pressure levels, which were already reduced by taking Doxazosin. This may cause dizziness, fainting, weakness, etc. So, it is advisable to limit or stop drinking alcohol while taking this medication.
