Amlodipine SF Oral Solution

Amlodipine is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. It is a dihydropyridine-type long-acting calcium channel blocker that operates partially in vasodilation. Although calcium channel blockers are not normally recommended for patients with heart failure, amlodipine can be used if other drugs are ineffective in treating hypertension or angina.

Frequently Asked Questions

Amlodipine belongs to a group of medicines known as calcium channel blockers.

Amlodipine Uses also include being utilised to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children at least 6 years old. Lowering blood pressure can lower the risk of a stroke or heart attack.

Amlodipine pills are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) or a certain type of chest pain called angina, to which a rare type of Prinzmetal's angina or variant angina belongs.

In patients with high blood pressure, this medicine works by relaxing the blood vessels so that the blood passes through them more easily. In patients with angina, amlodipine improves the arrival of blood to the heart muscle, which therefore receives more oxygen and, as a result, chest pain is prevented. This medication does not provide immediate relief from chest pain due to angina.

Amlodipine works by inhibiting calcium ion entrance from the dihydropyridine group (slow channel blocker or calcium ion antagonist) and preventing calcium ions from passing through the cell membrane in cardiac muscle and smooth muscle.

Amlodipine's antihypertensive mode of action is owing to a direct relaxing impact on vascular smooth muscle. The specific mechanism by which amlodipine cures angina is unknown, however it decreases overall ischemia load via the following two actions:

Amlodipine dilates the peripheral arterioles, lowering total peripheral resistance (afterload), which the heart must work against. As the heart rate remains steady, the myocardium's energy consumption and oxygen supply requirements are lowered.

Amlodipine's mode of action most likely includes dilatation of the large coronary arteries as well as coronary arterioles, both in normal and ischemic regions. In individuals with coronary artery spasm, this dilation enhances the delivery of oxygen to the myocardium (variant or Prinzmetal angina).

Always use amlodipine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again.

The recommended starting dose is 5 mg of amlodipine, once daily. The dose is often increased to 10 mg of amlodipine once daily.

You can take this medicine before or after meals. It should be taken at the same time each day. Do not take Amlodipine with grapefruit juice.

Use in children and adolescents is rare

For children and adolescents (6-17 years of age), the recommended starting dose is typically 2.5 mg daily. The maximum recommended dose is 5 mg daily.

It is important not to interrupt the administration of the tablets.

Many patients have reported that it has become difficult to obtain liquid version of their medicines when they are having difficulty taking more traditional dose forms.

Instead of prescriptions for manufactured solutions or suspensions, some patients are being advised to use a crushed tablet dissolved in water to achieve a liquid version of their medicine.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always a suitable or convenient option for some patients.
