What is Olmetec?

Olmesartan medoxomil is a selective orally active angiotensin II receptor (type AT1), antagonist. Angiotensin II is the main vasoactive hormone of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and plays a fundamental role in the pathophysiology of hypertension. The effects of angiotensin II include vasoconstriction, stimulation of aldosterone synthesis and release, cardiac stimulation, and renal sodium reabsorption. Olmesartan blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by blocking its binding to the AT1 receptor in tissues, including the vascular smooth musculature and the adrenal gland. The action of olmesartan is independent of the origin or the synthesis route of angiotensin II. Selective antagonism of angiotensin II (AT1) receptors results in increased plasma renin levels and angiotensin I and II concentrations, and decreased plasma aldosterone concentrations.

Olmetec is used in the treatment of high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) in adults, and in children and adolescents from 6 to less than 18 years of age. High blood pressure can damage blood vessels in organs such as the heart, kidneys, brain, and eyes. In some cases, this can lead to heart attack, heart or kidney failure, stroke, or blindness. Normally, high blood pressure has no symptoms. It is important to control your blood pressure to avoid damage.
How do I use it and its dosage?
Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again.
The recommended Olmetec dose is one 10 mg tablet daily. In the event that blood pressure is not adequately controlled, your doctor may increase the dose to 20 mg or 40 mg per day or prescribe additional treatment.
In patients with mild to moderate renal impairment, the maximum dose is 20 mg once a day.
The tablets can be taken with or without food. Take the tablets with a sufficient amount of water (for example, a glass). If possible, take your dose at the same time each day, for example at breakfast time.
Children and adolescents from 6 to less than 18 years of age:
The recommended starting dose is 10 mg daily. If the patient's blood pressure is not adequately controlled, the doctor may decide to change the dose up to 20 or 40 mg once a day. In children weighing less than 35 kg, the dose will not exceed 20 mg once a day.
Side effects & precautions
Like all medicines, the Olmetec medication can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. If these occur, they are often mild and do not require stopping treatment.
The following two side effects can be serious, although not many people may have them.
- In rare cases (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people) the following allergic reactions, which can affect the entire body, have been reported: inflammation of the face, mouth, and/or larynx, along with itching and a rash. If this happens to you, stop taking Olmetec and contact your doctor immediately.
- Rarely (but slightly more often in elderly patients) Olmetec may produce a pronounced drop in blood pressure in susceptible patients or as a result of an allergic reaction. This can cause severe dizziness or lightheadedness. If this happens to you, stop taking Olmetec, consult your doctor immediately and lie flat.

Common Olmetec 20 mg side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):
- Dizziness, headache, nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach pain, gastroenteritis, fatigue, sore throat, stuffy and runny nose, bronchitis, flu-like symptoms, cough, pain, chest pain, pain back, bone pain, joint pain, urinary tract infection, swelling of ankles, feet, legs, hands, arms, blood in the urine.
Some changes have also been observed in the results of certain analytical blood tests:
- increased fat levels (hypertriglyceridemia), increased uric acid levels (hyperuricemia), increased blood urea, increased liver, and muscle function test values.
Uncommon olmetec 20 mg side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):
- Rapid allergic reactions that can affect the entire body and can cause breathing problems, as well as a rapid drop in blood pressure that can even lead to fainting (anaphylactic reactions), swelling of the face, vertigo, vomiting, weakness, feeling of malaise, muscle pain, a rash, allergic rash, itching, rash (skin rash), swelling of the skin (hives), angina (chest pain or feeling of discomfort).
Blood tests have shown a decrease in the number of a type of blood cells called platelets (thrombocytopenia).
Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):
- Lack of energy, muscle cramps, worsening kidney function, kidney failure.
Some changes have been observed in the results of certain blood tests. These include increased levels of potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia) and increased levels of components related to kidney function.
