What Is Fosinopril?
Fosinopril is a medication used to treat hypertension or high blood pressure. It is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and it regulates blood pressure by dilating and relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. High blood pressure increases the risks of heart attack, stroke and kidney problems. Fosinopril is also used to treat some types of chronic heart failure. It increases the chances of survival after heart attacks in people who suffer from cardiovascular diseases.
ACE enzymes produce compounds that build up on the walls of blood vessels and narrow them down. This causes inadequate supply of oxygenated blood all over the body. This condition can be fatal if not treated for a long time.
How Does Fosinopril Work?
Fosinopril belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin-converting enzymes (ACE) inhibitors. The Angiotensin Converting Enzymes produce Angiotensin ll, which narrows veins and arteries, and thereby increases blood pressure.
Fosinopril (an ACE inhibitor) slows down the activity of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme, which ultimately restricts the synthesis of Angiotensin ll. As a result, the blood vessels relax and dilate. Therapy with Fosinopril decreases the strain on the heart and allows it to pump blood all over the body efficiently.
The lowered blood pressure also improves the function of a failing heart. High progression rate of kidney disease or diabetes can be lowered with Fosinopril therapy.
How Do I Use Fosinopril?
- Fosinopril is taken once or twice daily with or without food as prescribed by your doctor.
- To get the best results, use this medication regularly. Taking it on the same time will help you remember better.
- Do not stop using Fosinopril even if you feel better.
For the treatment of high blood pressure, this medication takes several weeks to make your blood pressure normal. And in case of treatment of congestive heart failure, it may take from weeks to months to work properly.

- The initial dose is usually 10 mg daily alone or with a diuretic, taken orally once a day.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Fosinopril?

Unlike other ACE inhibitors that can only be excreted through kidneys, Fosinopril can be eliminated from the body by both renal and hepatic pathways. This characteristic of Fosinopril makes it a better and safer choice, when it comes to treatment medications for hypertension or heart failure.
Due to this quality of Fosinopril, heart failure patients on dialysis or with impaired kidney function can also use this medication.
