What is Vokanamet?

Vokanamet is a diabetes medicine that contains the active ingredients canagliflozin and metformin. It is used, along with diet and exercise, to control glucose (sugar) levels in adult patients with type 2 diabetes that is not sufficiently controlled by metformin, or with metformin combined with other diabetes medications, including insulin, when such a combination fails to achieve adequate disease control. Vokanamet canagliflozin uses also include helping replace separately administered canagliflozin and metformin.

How does it work?

Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas cannot make the amount of insulin needed to control blood glucose or the body is unable to use insulin effectively. This results in increased blood glucose levels. Vokanamet contains two different active ingredients with different mechanisms of action: - canagliflozin blocks a protein in the kidneys called sodium-glucose co-transporter type 2 (SGLT2). SGLT2 returns glucose to the bloodstream when the kidneys filter the blood. By blocking the action of SGLT2, canagliflozin causes more glucose to be removed through the urine, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Vokanamet contains two different active ingredients, canagliflozin, and metformin. These are two drugs that work together in different ways to lower blood glucose (sugar) levels and may help prevent heart disease in adults with type 2 diabetes. This medicine is given alone or in combination with other medicines that you may already be taking to treat your type 2 diabetes (such as insulin, a DPP-4 inhibitor [such as sitagliptin, saxagliptin, or linagliptin], a sulfonylurea [such as glimepiride or glipizide], or pioglitazone) that lower blood sugar levels. You may already be taking one or more of these medications to treat your type 2 diabetes.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Follow exactly the instructions of administration of the medicine indicated by your doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

How much should you take

The Vokanamet canagliflozin dosage is one tablet twice a day. The concentration of Vokanamet you should take will vary depending on your condition and the amount of canagliflozin and metformin needed to control your blood sugar. Your doctor will prescribe the dose that is right for you.

How to take this medicine

Swallow the tablet whole with water. It is best to take the tablet with a meal. This will lessen the chance of stomach upset. Always try to take it at the same time of day. That will help you remember to take it. If your doctor has prescribed this medicine together with a cholesterol-lowering medicine such as cholestyramine, you should take this medicine at least 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after taking the cholesterol-lowering medicine.

Your doctor may prescribe Vokanamet with some other glucose-lowering medicine. Remember to take all medications as directed by your doctor to get the best results for your health.

Diet and exercise

To help control your diabetes, you should also follow the advice of your doctor, pharmacist, or diet and exercise nurse. In particular, if you are following a diabetic weight control diet, you should continue it while taking this medicine.
