Vipdomet combines two antihyperglycemic drugs with complementary mechanisms and differentiated action to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: alogliptin, a dipeptidyl-peptidase4 (DPP4) inhibitor, and metformin, a member of the class of biguanides.

People also ask

What is Vipdomet?

Vipdomet contains two different medicines, called alogliptin and metformin:

  • Alogliptin belongs to a group of medicines called DPP-4 inhibitors (dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors). Alogliptin works to increase insulin levels in the body after a meal and decrease the amount of sugar in the body.
  • Metformin belongs to a group of medicines called biguanides, which also help decrease blood sugar, decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver, and helping insulin to act more effectively.

Both groups of drugs are "oral antidiabetics

How does it work?

Vipdomet combines two antihyperglycemic drugs with complementary mechanisms and differentiated action to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: alogliptin, a dipeptidyl-peptidase4 (DPP4) inhibitor, and metformin, a member of the class of biguanides.

Alogliptin

Alogliptin is a powerful and highly selective inhibitor of DPP-4,> 10,000 times more selective for DPP-4 than for other related enzymes, including DPP-8 and DPP-9. The DPP-4 enzyme is the main enzyme involved in the rapid degradation of incretin hormones, the peptide similar to glucagon 1 (GLP-1), and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), which are released by the intestine and whose levels rise in response to food intake. GLP-1 and GIP increase insulin biosynthesis and secretion of pancreatic beta cells, while the GLP-1 also inhibits glucagon secretion and hepatic glucose production. In consequence, alogliptin improves glycemic control through a glucose-dependent mechanism, which improves insulin release and suppresses glucagon levels when levels of glucose are elevated.

Metformin

Metformin is a biguanide with antihyperglycemic effects, which lowers plasma glucose both basal and postprandial. Does not stimulate insulin secretion, and consequently does not cause hypoglycemia.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Vipdomet tablet uses include being indicated to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, or NIDDM. Vipdomet is taken when it is not possible to control blood sugar through diet, exercise, and other oral anti-diabetic medications such as metformin alone, insulin alone or metformin and pioglitazone were taken together. If you are already taking alogliptin and metformin in individual tablets, Vipdomet can replace them in a single tablet. It is important that you do not stop following the diet and exercise advice that your doctor or nurse has given you.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again. Your doctor will tell you exactly how much Vipdomet you need to take. The amount of Vipdomet will vary depending on your condition and the current doses of metformin alone, metformin in combination with pioglitazone, insulin, and/or individual tablets of alogliptin and metformin. The recommended Vipdomet tablet dose is one tablet twice a day. If you have reduced kidney function, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose that may need to be given as separate tablets of alogliptin and metformin. Swallow the tablets whole with water. You should take this medication with food to reduce the chance of an upset stomach.
