What is Engylid?

Engylid (Prandin) is an oral antidiabetic that contains repaglinide which helps your pancreas make more insulin and lower your blood sugar (glucose).

Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to control the level of sugar in the blood or in which the body does not respond normally to the insulin it produces (formerly known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes start at maturity). Prandin is used to control type 2 diabetes and as a supplement to diet and exercise: Treatment should be started if diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone have not been sufficient to control (or decrease) the level of blood sugar. Prandin can also be taken together with metformin, another diabetes medicine.

How does it work?

Engylid works by closing the membrane-dependent ATP-dependent potassium channels of ß-pancreatic cells, via a different target protein from other secretagogues, depolarizing them and causing the opening of Ca channels. Increased Ca flow stimulates the secretion of insulin from ß-cells.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Prandin tablet uses include being utilised for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled only with diet and exercise. Engylid is also indicated in combination with metformin in patients who do not respond adequately to a single medication. Treatment with Engylid must be complemented with diet and exercise.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again. It is very important that you continue to take this medicine for as long as your doctor prescribes it. The doctor will calculate your Prandin tablet dose. This diabetes medication is to be taken orally.

Normally, the starting dose is 0.5 mg taken just before each main meal. The tablets should be taken with a glass of water just before or within 30 minutes before each main meal.

The dose can be adjusted by your doctor up to 4 mg, which should be taken just before or in your 30s minutes before each main meal. The maximum recommended dose is 16 mg daily.

Do not take more Prandin tablets than your doctor has recommended. Always take Prandin exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor if you are not sure.

If you take more Prandin than you should

If you take too many tablets, your blood sugar level may become too low and cause hypoglycemia. Please read what hypoglycemia is and how to treat it in the section If you have hypoglycemia.

If you forget to take Prandin

If you forget to take a dose, take the next dose as you normally do, never take twice the dose.

If you stop taking Prandin

Keep in mind that the desired effect is not achieved if you stop taking Prandin. Your diabetes can get worse. If any changes in your treatment are necessary, check with your doctor first.
