Forxiga
Forxiga is an anti-diabetic medication indicated for adults whose disease is not controlled in a satisfactory manner. In type 2 diabetes, it is used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise in patients who cannot take metformin (another diabetes medicine). It can also be used as therapy "complementary" with other diabetes medications. In type 1 diabetes, Forxiga is used with insulin in patients who are overweight (rate of body mass of at least 27 kg/m2) when insulin in monotherapy does not sufficiently control blood sugar.

Forxiga Tablets (Dapagliflozin) for Type 2 Diabetes Treatment
If your blood sugar levels are still higher than they should be, even though you are trying to eat well and stay active, you are not alone. Managing type 2 diabetes can feel like a constant balancing act. When lifestyle changes alone are not enough, Forxiga contains dapagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor that works differently from many other diabetes medication options.
Forxiga is used for adults and children aged 10 and over with type 2 diabetes, adults with symptomatic chronic heart failure, and adults with chronic kidney disease. For diabetes, it is always used alongside diet and exercise. If approved after an online consultation, you can order Forxiga tablets securely from Pharmacy Planet.
How Do Forxiga Tablets Work for Blood Sugar Control?
Unlike some sugar-lowering tablets that increase insulin, dapagliflozin works through the kidneys. It blocks a protein called SGLT2, which normally reabsorbs glucose back into the bloodstream. By blocking this process, excess glucose is passed out of the body in urine.
- Lowers Blood Sugar Without Forcing More Insulin — Works independently of the pancreas.
- Supports Daily Glucose Management — Provides consistent blood sugar reduction throughout the day.
- Flexible Use — Can be used alone if metformin is not suitable, or added to other oral diabetes treatment options.
Due to its mechanism of action, glucose will appear in your urine while taking it. This is normal and expected.
Can Taking Forxiga Tablets Cause Weight Loss?
Many people ask about weight changes with Forxiga. As it removes glucose from the body, you lose calories through urine. Some patients notice modest weight reduction over time. It can also cause mild fluid loss, especially when first starting treatment.
However, Forxiga is not a weight-loss medication, results vary from person to person, and healthy eating and activity still matter. If you notice rapid weight loss, dizziness, or signs of dehydration, seek medical advice.
How to Take Forxiga Tablets
The usual dose for type 2 diabetes is 10mg once daily. Take at any time of day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Kidney Function and Forxiga:
- For type 2 diabetes, the glucose-lowering effect is reduced if eGFR falls below 45 mL/min/1.73m², and additional treatment may be needed.
- Forxiga is not recommended to be started if eGFR is below 15 mL/min/1.73m².
- Kidney function should be checked before starting and monitored during treatment.
If you also use insulin or a sulphonylurea, your dose may need adjusting to reduce the risk of low blood sugar.
Who Can Take Forxiga Tablets?
Forxiga may be suitable for:
- Adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes.
- Children aged 10 years and above (for diabetes only).
- Patients who cannot tolerate metformin.
- People needing additional diabetic care alongside other treatments.
It is not used for type 1 diabetes. Important safety considerations include: Forxiga increases urination which can lead to dehydration, dizziness, and low blood pressure — drink fluids regularly. Although uncommon, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) has been reported; seek urgent help if you experience nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or rapid breathing. As more glucose passes into urine, there may be an increased risk of urinary tract infections and genital infections.
Possible Side Effects of Forxiga Tablets
This medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
Common Side Effects:
- Genital infections
- Increased urination
- Thirst
- Urinary tract infections
- Mild dizziness
Serious Side Effects:
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Severe dehydration
- Severe allergic reaction
- Rare serious infection of the genital area
If you develop severe, persistent, or worrying symptoms, get immediate medical attention.
Why Many People Choose Forxiga Tablets
Many patients prefer Forxiga because it is taken once daily, works independently of insulin, fits easily into daily routines, and can be combined with other diabetes medications. For some people, it feels like a practical, steady addition to their diabetes management plan.

Yes. Forxiga removes excess glucose through urine, so you may notice more frequent urination, especially in the first few weeks. This is normal and shows the medicine is working.
Forxiga begins working after your first dose. Blood sugar improvements are often seen within the first week, but full results may take several weeks of regular use.
Yes. Forxiga can be used on its own if metformin is not suitable for you due to intolerance or side effects, following a clinical review.
You can still take your usual dose. Forxiga does not depend on meals to work, unlike some other diabetes tablets.
Rarely, yes. Seek urgent help if you develop nausea, stomach pain, rapid breathing, confusion, or unusual tiredness, even if your blood sugar is not extremely high.
It can be used in many patients, but the glucose-lowering effect reduces if kidney function is low. Kidney tests are required before and during treatment.
Alcohol can increase the risk of dehydration and ketoacidosis. It is best to drink moderately and avoid excessive alcohol intake while on this medicine.
Dizziness may be linked to fluid loss or low blood pressure. Drink fluids and sit down if needed. If symptoms continue or worsen, seek immediate medical advice.
