Onglyza
Onglyza is a medicine to lower glucose. The active substance in this medication is saxagliptin, a so-called DPP 4 inhibitor. Onglyza ensures that the pancreas lengthens to make insulin. Also, during that time the body has the opportunity to process glucose from food. This prevents the blood sugar level from rising too high after meals. Onglyza is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This is a type of diabetes in which the pancreas produces too little insulin and the body does not respond adequately to insulin. As a result, the blood glucose level becomes too high and complaints such as thirst, fatigue, excessive urination, and poorly healing wounds may occur. It is important that diabetic patients keep their blood sugar levels stable. In this way, the symptoms disappear and (serious) complications are prevented. With Onglyza you can achieve a stable glucose level.

Saxagliptin is a highly potent, selective, reversible, and competitive DPP4 (Ki: 1.3 nM) inhibitor. Administration of saxagliptin in patients with type 2 diabetes inhibited the enzymatic activity of DPP4 for a period of 24 hours. Following oral glucose overload, this DPP4 inhibition caused a 2 to 3-fold increase in circulating levels of active incretin hormones, including glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). , a decrease in glucagon concentrations and an increase in the response capacity of beta glucose-dependent cells, thereby increasing insulin and C-peptide concentrations. The increase in insulin produced by the beta cells of the pancreas and the decrease Glucagon levels produced by pancreatic alpha cells was associated with lower fasting glucose concentrations and reduced fluctuation in glucose levels after oral glucose overload or after a meal. Saxagliptin improves glycemic control by reducing fasting and postprandial glucose concentrations in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Onglyza uses include being indicated to treat adult patients 18 years of age and older with "type 2 diabetes" if the disease cannot be adequately controlled with oral anti-diabetic medication, diet, and exercise. Onglyza is used alone or together with insulin or other antidiabetic medicines. It is important that you follow the diet and exercise advice given by your doctor or healthcare staff.
