OPSITE POST-OP DRESSING

Managing a surgical wound at home during the recovery period requires a dressing that handles wound exudate, keeps external water away from the wound, and holds reliably in place between clinical visits. Opsite Post-Op Dressing is a waterproof absorbent island dressing from Smith & Nephew specifically designed for post-operative wound care. A transparent waterproof film outer layer, a central absorbent pad, and a self-adhesive border work together to manage the wound, allow showering, and allow the wound to be monitored through the film. Opsite Post-Op Dressing is a regulated medical device from Smith & Nephew. It is an absorbent island dressing with a transparent waterproof polyurethane film outer layer, a central absorbent wound contact pad, and a self-adhesive film border that holds the dressing in position on the periwound skin without secondary fixation. The product is designed and named specifically for post-operative wound management in the period following surgery.

The film outer layer is the same transparent, waterproof polyurethane film used across the Opsite range. It is impermeable to liquid water, allowing patients to shower during recovery without covering the dressing. It is moisture vapour permeable, allowing water vapour from the skin and wound surface to pass through and evaporate rather than accumulating beneath the film. The film is transparent, allowing the wound, the periwound area, and the state of the absorbent pad to be observed at any time without removing the dressing.

The central absorbent pad manages wound exudate from the surgical wound surface. Exudate from the wound passes into the absorbent pad, which holds it away from the wound surface and prevents accumulation beneath the film. The wound contact layer has low adherence properties, reducing the tendency for the pad to bond to the wound surface during the wear period.

Nine configurations are available, covering wound dimensions from small day surgery incisions to long surgical incision lines. The same 6.5cm x 5cm size is available in both a pack of 5 for home use and a pack of 100 for clinical bulk supply. Eight additional sizes span the range of post-operative wound dimensions encountered across surgical specialties.

Opsite Post-Op Dressing requires completely dry periwound skin for the adhesive border to bond effectively. Apply only to dry intact skin. Apply without tension. Change when the absorbent pad is visibly saturated, the film edges have lifted, or when clinically indicated. Do not apply to infected wounds. Follow the wound care instructions provided by your surgical team.

Waterproof Film Outer

The polyurethane film outer layer is impermeable to liquid water. When applied with all edges adhering to the surrounding skin, water from showering cannot penetrate the film and reach the surgical wound. The film is also moisture vapour permeable, allowing the skin beneath to breathe and preventing moisture accumulation that would macerate the wound surface and surrounding skin. The transparent film allows visual inspection of the wound at any time without removing the dressing.

Absorbent Pad and Low Adherence Wound Contact

The absorbent pad at the centre of the dressing draws wound exudate from the surgical wound surface and holds it within the pad. The wound contact layer presents a low adherence surface to the wound, reducing bonding between the pad and the healing tissue during the wear period. At each dressing change, the pad can typically be lifted from the wound without significant resistance. If the pad feels adherent, dampen with sterile saline before lifting rather than pulling.

Adhesive Film Border

The film border extends beyond the central pad on all sides and adheres to the dry intact periwound skin. This self-adhesive border makes the dressing self-contained and removes the need for tape, bandage, or other fixation material. For patients managing their wound at home between post-operative follow-up appointments, the self-contained format simplifies daily dressing management.

Nine Sizes for Surgical Wound Dimensions

The range of nine configurations reflects the diversity of surgical incision sizes across different procedures. Small day surgery incisions need the smaller sizes. Abdominal, thoracic, and spinal surgery incisions need medium sizes. Long orthopaedic incision lines from knee and hip replacement need the larger formats up to 10cm x 35cm. Having the appropriate size allows full wound coverage with the pad while the film border adheres to intact skin on all sides.

Preparation

• Wash hands and use gloves.
• Ensure the wound and surrounding skin are completely dry before application.
• Do not apply to wet, greasy, or compromised skin.

Application

• Select the appropriate size for the wound dimensions.
• Remove the release liner.
• Position the central pad centrally over the wound.
• Apply the film border to the surrounding skin without tension or stretch.
• Smooth from the centre outward and press the borders firmly on all sides.
• No secondary fixation is required.

Removal and Change

• Change when the pad is visibly saturated, the border has lifted, or when clinically indicated.
• Lift one corner of the film border and peel slowly back along the skin surface.
• Do not peel upward at a sharp angle.
• Support the skin ahead of the peeling edge on fragile or elderly skin.
• If the pad is adherent, dampen with sterile saline before lifting.
• Assess the wound at each change.

Apply without tension. Film applied under stretch on elderly or fragile skin can cause blistering or skin stripping when it recoils. Apply relaxed. If applying over a joint, position the joint at rest before application to allow movement without early edge lift.

Opsite Post-Op 6.5cm x 5cm: Pack of 5

A small dressing for minor day surgery wounds, small incisions, and situations where a limited home supply of five dressings covers the wound care requirement for the healing period.

Opsite Post-Op 6.5cm x 5cm: Pack of 100

The same 6.5cm x 5cm dressing in a clinical bulk pack of 100. Suited to day surgery units, minor procedure clinics, and clinical settings where this smaller size is used in high volume.

Opsite Post-Op 8.5cm x 9.5cm: Pack of 20

A medium square dressing for moderate-sized surgical wounds. Suited to general surgical incisions, laparoscopic port sites, and other wound dimensions in this range.

Opsite Post-Op 8.5cm x 15.5cm: Pack of 20

A medium rectangular dressing for longer wounds that fall between the small and large formats. Suited to incisions that run along a body region where the square format does not provide adequate length.

A long rectangular dressing for extended incision lines in the 25cm length range. Suited to spinal surgery, longer abdominal incisions, and other procedures where a single 25cm dressing replaces multiple shorter ones.

Opsite Post-Op 10cm x 30cm: Pack of 20

A long rectangular dressing for incision lines up to 30cm. Suited to major abdominal procedures and longer spinal or orthopaedic incisions where a single dressing covers the full wound length.

Opsite Post-Op 10cm x 35cm: Pack of 20

The largest size in the range at 35cm. For the longest surgical incision lines including those following total knee replacement, hip replacement, and other major lower limb orthopaedic procedures. A single dressing covers the full incision length.

All nine configurations use the same waterproof film and absorbent pad construction. Size selection should ensure the central pad covers the full wound surface with the film border adhering to intact periwound skin on all sides.

When Not to Use Opsite Post-Op Dressing

• Infected wounds.
• Wet, greasy, or compromised periwound skin.
• Wounds producing exudate exceeding the pad absorption capacity.
• Known sensitivity to polyurethane or the adhesive components.

Precautions

• Apply to completely dry intact skin.
• Apply without tension.
• Remove slowly along the skin surface.
• Dampen with saline if the pad is adherent before removal.
• Single use only.

Adverse Effects

• Skin stripping if applied under tension or removed sharply from fragile skin.
• Adhesive skin reaction in individuals sensitive to the adhesive.
• Wound pad adherence if the dressing is left beyond the appropriate change interval.
