What Is INTRASITE Conformable?
INTRASITE Conformable is a Class IIb regulated medical device from Smith & Nephew. It is a hydrogel wound dressing consisting of a conformable gauze mesh carrier impregnated with hydrogel. The mesh provides the physical structure of the dressing; it can be cut to any shape that suits the wound, applied flat over a wound surface, or laid into a cavity or sinus tract. The hydrogel it carries is the active wound contact element, delivering moisture to the wound surface and supporting moist wound therapy.
It is distinct from INTRASITE Gel, which is an amorphous hydrogel supplied in tubes or syringes for direct application to wound surfaces as a free-flowing gel. INTRASITE Conformable is a sheet product, it has physical dimensions, can be cut, and is placed on or in the wound rather than squeezed out. The conformable mesh carrier allows it to follow the contours of the wound surface more closely than a rigid sheet dressing could, including on anatomically curved or irregular wound sites.
The hydrogel in INTRASITE Conformable contains a high proportion of water. When applied to a dry or lightly exuding wound surface, the gel donates moisture from its water content to the wound. This moisture rehydrates dried wound tissue, softens slough and fibrin deposits, and creates the consistently moist environment in which the body's naturally occurring proteolytic enzymes can perform autolytic debridement, the breakdown of non-viable tissue. The dressing does not absorb exudate in the way a foam or fibre dressing does; it is a moisture donor rather than an absorber.
Three sizes are available: 10cm x 10cm, 10cm x 20cm, and 10cm x 40cm. All sizes can be cut. A secondary dressing is always required to cover and retain the hydrogel contact layer.
INTRASITE Conformable is a moisture-donating dressing. It is not appropriate for heavily exuding wounds, applying a hydrogel to a wound already producing high volumes of exudate risks maceration of the wound bed and periwound skin. How INTRASITE Conformable Works
Hydrogel Moisture Donation
The hydrogel impregnated into the mesh carrier contains a high water content. When placed against a wound surface with insufficient moisture, dry tissue, dried slough, desiccated wound bed, the hydrogel releases water to the wound. This water transfer softens the tissue and raises the moisture level at the wound surface. The resulting moist environment supports the cellular and enzymatic processes of wound healing that cannot proceed on a dry wound bed.
Supporting Autolytic Debridement
Autolytic debridement is the natural process by which the body removes non-viable tissue from a wound using its own proteolytic enzymes. These enzymes are present in wound fluid and act on slough, fibrin, and necrotic material when the wound surface remains consistently moist. On a dry wound, enzyme activity is reduced because the wound fluid transporting them is absent. Secondary Dressing Function
The secondary dressing placed over INTRASITE Conformable retains the hydrogel against the wound surface, prevents the gel from drying out during the wear period, and provides protection from external contamination. An absorbent secondary dressing may draw some of the donated moisture away from the wound rather than allowing it to remain at the wound surface. Where moisture retention at the wound bed is the priority, a non-absorbent secondary, such as a film dressing, may be more appropriate. Clinical guidance on secondary dressing selection is recommended for complex wounds.
How to Apply INTRASITE Conformable
Preparation
- Wash hands and use gloves.
- Clean the wound with sterile saline and remove any loose debris.
- Prepare the secondary dressing before opening INTRASITE Conformable.
Application
- Remove INTRASITE Conformable from its packaging.
- Cut to the required size and shape if needed, using clean scissors.
- Place the dressing directly against the wound surface.
- For cavities, lay the dressing loosely into the wound space. Do not pack tightly.
- Apply the secondary dressing immediately.
- Label with date and time.
Change Frequency and Removal
- Change every one to three days, or as clinically indicated.
- At each change, irrigate with saline if the dressing is adherent.
- Assess the wound bed for progress - slough should gradually soften and reduce.
- Seek clinical assessment if the wound is not improving after several changes.

A rectangular format for elongated wound sites, including leg ulcer areas that extend along the limb, post-operative wound beds, and other sites where the wound length exceeds the 10cm x 10cm coverage. Can be cut to shape.
INTRASITE Conformable 10cm x 40cm
The longest format in the range. Suited to extensive wound areas, wounds that run along a significant length of a body surface, and cavity or tunnel wounds where the full length of the cavity requires hydrogel contact. Can be cut and shaped as needed. For extensive or complex wounds of this scale, use under clinical supervision.

Change every one to three days, depending on wound condition and exudate output. At each change, assess the wound bed for progress, slough and fibrin should gradually soften and reduce with consistent use.
