Duoderm Extra Thin (Hydrocolloid Dressing)

There are wounds that do not need a thick, highly absorbent dressing - wounds in the later stages of healing, superficial abrasions, skin that needs protecting from friction or pressure, and areas where a low-profile cover under clothing is more practical than a bulkier format. DuoDERM Extra Thin is a thin hydrocolloid dressing from ConvaTec designed for dry to lightly exuding wounds where the full absorbency of standard hydrocolloid is not required. Five configurations including a spots format for small localised sites. Self-adhesive. Waterproof. No prescription required.

DuoDERM Extra Thin is a Class IIb regulated medical device from ConvaTec. It is a thin version of the DuoDERM hydrocolloid range. The dressing has a reduced-thickness hydrocolloid matrix on its wound contact side and a thin polyurethane film outer layer. The film is transparent, which allows the wound to be monitored visually without removing the dressing. The dressing is self-adhesive; it adheres to dry intact skin around the wound without secondary fixation.

The "Extra Thin" designation reflects the reduced thickness compared with standard DuoDERM. Standard DuoDERM dressings have a thicker hydrocolloid layer that provides greater absorbency for moderate to heavily exuding wounds. DuoDERM Extra Thin has a thinner layer suited to wounds with minimal fluid output - dry or lightly moist surfaces, wounds that are healing and producing less exudate than before, and skin areas at risk of friction or pressure that benefit from a protective hydrocolloid cover without significant absorption.

The DuoDERM Extra Thin range includes five configurations. Four are square or rectangular dressings in standard sheet sizes. The fifth is the Spots format, small oval patches measuring 4.4cm x 3.8cm, intended for compact and irregular small wound sites, blisters, minor pressure areas, and localised skin breaks where a standard sheet dressing would extend significantly beyond the wound area.

There are no active pharmaceutical ingredients. DuoDERM Extra Thin does not treat infection. It is for dry to lightly exuding clean wounds.

DuoDERM Extra Thin is not suitable for wounds producing moderate to heavy exudate - the thin hydrocolloid layer has lower absorbent capacity than standard DuoDERM. If the gel under the dressing reaches the edges rapidly or exudate is escaping the dressing, a thicker format such as standard DuoDERM or Comfeel Plus is more appropriate. DuoDERM Extra Thin has no antimicrobial action and should not be used on infected wounds.

Thin Hydrocolloid Matrix

The wound contact surface contains a hydrocolloid matrix based on carboxymethylcellulose. When wound moisture contacts this matrix, it absorbs the fluid and forms a soft gel. In DuoDERM Extra Thin, this gel layer is thinner than in standard DuoDERM, which matches its intended use on wounds producing little fluid. The gel maintains a moist environment at the wound surface, supporting the cellular repair processes, cell migration, tissue formation, and epithelial resurfacing, that characterise moist wound healing.

Transparent Film Outer Layer

The polyurethane film on the outer face of the dressing is transparent. This allows a clinician, carer, or patient to see the wound through the dressing and monitor how the gel is forming and how the wound is progressing. When the gel has spread to the edge of the dressing, a change is due. This visual monitoring capability reduces the need to remove the dressing simply to check on the wound, limiting unnecessary disturbance to the wound environment.

Waterproof and Self Adhesive

The film is waterproof, allowing patients to shower and wash while the dressing is in place. The self-adhesive hydrocolloid adheres to dry intact skin around the wound without secondary tape or bandage. For most wound sites, DuoDERM Extra Thin is self-contained.

The Gel Appearance on Removal

When DuoDERM Extra Thin is removed, a yellowish or brownish gel will be present at the wound site. This is the hydrocolloid gel formed from absorbed wound moisture, it is a normal consequence of how the dressing works and is not a sign of infection or deterioration. The gel can be gently rinsed away with saline before assessing the wound and applying a fresh dressing.

Preparation

• Wash hands and use gloves.
• Clean the wound and dry the surrounding skin.
• The dressing adheres to dry intact skin - ensure the periwound area is fully dry before applying.

Application

• Select the appropriate configuration.
• Remove the release liner.
• Position the dressing centrally over the wound.
• Smooth the dressing down from the centre outward, ensuring no air is trapped.
• No secondary dressing or tape is required.

Change Frequency and Removal

• Change when the gel has spread to the dressing border, when the border lifts, or when clinically indicated.
• DuoDERM Extra Thin can typically remain in place for up to seven days on wounds with minimal exudate.
• To remove, lift one corner and peel slowly back along the skin.
• The yellowish gel on the wound and dressing is normal - rinse with saline before assessment.

DuoDERM Extra Thin is waterproof and can remain in place during showering and bathing. Avoid prolonged immersion. After washing, pat the dressing dry and check that the border is still adhering. If the border has lifted, replace the dressing with a fresh one.

DuoDERM Extra Thin Spots 4.4cm x 3.8cm - Pack of 10

Small oval shaped patches suited to minor wound sites, blisters, small abrasions, and localised areas where a standard square dressing would be disproportionately large. The oval shape follows the natural contour of small wound areas and reduces the tendency of corners to lift.

DuoDERM Extra Thin 5cm x 10cm - Pack of 10

A narrow rectangular format suited to elongated wound sites including linear wounds, minor surgical incisions in the later healing phase, and other sites where length exceeds width. The 5cm x 10cm provides more coverage along the wound course than a square.

DuoDERM Extra Thin 7.5cm x 7.5cm - Pack of 5

A small-medium square format appropriate for moderate-sized wounds producing minimal exudate. Suitable for wounds that exceed the coverage area of the Spots format but where the 10cm x 10cm sheet would be larger than needed.

DuoDERM Extra Thin 10cm x 10cm - Pack of 10

A medium square format suited to moderate-sized wounds where thin hydrocolloid is clinically appropriate and the 10cm x 10cm pad provides full wound coverage.

DuoDERM Extra Thin 15cm x 15cm - Pack of 10

The largest format in the range. Suited to more extensive wound areas where the thin profile of DuoDERM Extra Thin is still appropriate but broader coverage is needed. Also used on areas at risk of skin breakdown, pressure points and friction areas where the hydrocolloid provides a protective layer.

In all configurations, select the format whose pad covers the wound fully while the adhesive border rests on intact surrounding skin.

Do Not Use DuoDERM Extra Thin If

• The wound is infected as no antimicrobial action is present.
• The wound is producing moderate to heavy exudate - the thin layer is not appropriate.
• Known sensitivity to the hydrocolloid or film components.

Precautions

• Single use only.
• The yellow or brown gel on removal is normal hydrocolloid gel - not a sign of infection.
• Assess the wound at each change for signs of infection.
• Remove before MRI.

Adverse Effects

• Skin maceration if the dressing is left in place beyond the point where the gel has reached the border.
• Skin irritation at the adhesive border in patients with sensitive skin.

Wounds and Situations Where DuoDERM Extra Thin Is Appropriate

• Dry or lightly exuding clean wounds in the active healing or later healing phase, including healing pressure ulcers at lower grades, superficial abrasions, and post-procedure skin areas
• Areas of skin at risk of pressure damage or friction where a thin hydrocolloid provides protective cover without bulk
• Wounds where the low profile under clothing or bandaging is clinically or practically preferable to a thicker format
• Patients who benefit from visual wound monitoring through the transparent film without removing the dressing
• Adults and children where clinically directed

DuoDERM Extra Thin vs Standard DuoDERM vs Comfeel Plus

All three are ConvaTec hydrocolloid dressings using CMC gel technology. Standard DuoDERM has a thicker, more absorbent hydrocolloid layer for moderate to heavy exudate. DuoDERM Extra Thin has a thinner layer for dry to light exudate and offers transparent film for wound monitoring. Comfeel Plus is Coloplast's hydrocolloid equivalent in the opaque and transparent formats. Choose DuoDERM Extra Thin when a thin profile, transparent film, and low exudate capacity are the clinical requirements.
