About Fluvastatin Capsules

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a medication, which is prescribed to people suffering from high blood cholesterol levels. It lowers low density-lipoprotein or LDL, also known as bad cholesterol, in the blood and improves levels of ‘good’ cholesterol i.e. high-density lipoprotein or HDL. The medical term used for high levels of cholesterol is hypercholesterolemia.

High levels of cholesterol in your blood can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases like blocking and tightening of blood vessels, which can lead to a heart attack, chest pain and stroke. The medication can also be prescribed to reduce the risks of coronary revascularization procedures.

It also has the capacity to decrease the amount of cholesterol and various other fatty substances in the blood in children 10 to 17 years of age who have familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia.

Fluvastatin belongs to a class of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or "statins". Statins work by inhibiting the enzyme HMG CoA reductase, which is responsible for the production cholesterol in the liver.

It works by slowing down the production of cholesterol in the body. The decreased production prevents cholesterol build up on the walls of the arteries that may block the blood flow to the brain, heart and other parts of the body. The capsule is a low-intensity statin as it lowers blood cholesterol levels by less than 30%.

After 4 weeks of therapy, periodic lipid determinations are performed and the dosage is adjusted according to the patient’s response to treatment. Proper treatment guidelines are established at this point.

Major benefits include:

  • Reduces bad fats such as LDL and cholesterol
  • Raises good cholesterol (HDL) in your blood

Fluvastatin is commonly taken orally once or twice a day as prescribed by your doctor with or without food. It is better to take it regularly at the same time. It is most effective when taken at night as cholesterol synthesis takes place primarily at night.

Dosage

  • The dosage generally recommended is 20 to 80 mg on the daily basis.
  • It can be given once in the evening or twice daily.
  • It may be taken with an empty or full stomach.
  • The extended release capsule can be administered any time of the day
  • 2 40 mg capsules should not be administered at one time.

Paediatric Dosage of Fluvastatin

Children 9 to 16 years of age are usually given the initial dose of Fluvastatin 20 mg, which is taken orally once a day at bed time.

After 4 weeks of therapy and periodic lipid determinations, the doctor can increase the dose up to 80 mg/day, depending upon the patient’s response to medication. If you forget to take your dose on due time, take it as soon as you remember.

Skip the missed dose if it has been more than 12 hours since your last dose. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a dose you have missed. Do not crush, chew or open the capsule, swallow it whole with a glass of water. People who have trouble swallowing should get in touch with their doctor.

Side Effects

Minor side effects of the medicine include:

  • Gas
  • Fatigue
  • Heart burn
  • Head ache
  • Insomnia
  • Joint pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation

Severe side effects include:

  • Abdominal pain or cramps
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Itching
  • Muscle pain or cramps
  • Rash
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes

It can be associated with a condition in which your skeletal muscle tissue is damaged and starts breaking down. This condition if not treated can lead to kidney failure. If you are experiencing any of the major side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Precautions

It is important you take precautions when taking Fluvastatin or any medicine regularly. The medicine can be harmful if not administered properly. It is important that you take following precautionary steps:

  • If you are allergic or intolerant to Fluvastatin or any ingredient present in the capsules, make sure that your doctor or pharmacist knows about it.
  • It is important to tell your doctor what prescription or non-prescription medication you’re taking.
  • Do not take it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • It is highly recommended that you take a low fat and low cholesterol diet during your therapy with Fluvastatin.
  • Tell your doctor if you take more than two alcoholic beverages a day.
  • Let your doctor know if you have a history of liver or kidney disease.
  • Never stop taking the dose without your doctor’s approval even if you are feeling well.
  • Before having any laboratory tests, make sure your consulting doctor and the laboratory personnel know that you are on Fluvastatin.
