About Simvastatin Tablets
Simvastatin is a tablet used to reduce cholesterol levels. Simvastatin helps to prevent circulatory problems by reducing the activity of an enzyme in the liver that produces cholesterol. It is most effective when combined with exercise and a diet low in cholesterol. These tablets are swallowed whole and are available in varying strengths. You will likely be given a weaker tablet to start, usually 20mg. Simvastatin is available in strengths of 10mg, 20mg, 40mg or 80mg.
Simvastatin 20mg tablets belong to a group of medicines known as hydroxymethyl glutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors that work by reducing blood lipid, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.
After oral ingestion, simvastatin, an inactive lactone, hydrolyzes in the liver at corresponding active beta-hydroxy acid form having potent activity inhibiting HMGCoA reductase (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase). This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA in mevalonate, an initial and limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis. Simvastatin has been shown to reduce normal and elevated LDL-C levels. The LDL is formed from Very Low-Density Proteins (VLDL) and is catabolized predominantly through the high-affinity LDL receptor. The mechanism of the effect of LDL decrease of simvastatin may involve lowering cholesterol concentration VLDL (C-VLDL) and LDL receptor induction, resulting in decreased production and increased catabolism of LDL-C. Apolipoprotein B also decreases substantially during simvastatin treatment. Furthermore, simvastatin moderately increases HDL-C and reduces plasma TG. As a result of these changes, the ratios between C-total and C-HDL and LDL-C and HDL-C are reduced.
Simvastatin mg is indicated in:
Treatment of elevated blood cholesterol levels (primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia) in conjunction with diet, when diet or exercise has not lowered cholesterol.
Treatment of elevated blood cholesterol levels (homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia) along with diet and other cholesterol-lowering treatments.
The prevention of cardiovascular problems and cardiovascular death in patients with arteriosclerosis or diabetes, with high or normal cholesterol levels, along with other treatments.
Always take this high cholesterol med exactly as your doctor has told you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have doubts.
Your doctor will indicate the duration of your treatment with Simvastatin Pensa 20 mg. Do not stop treatment earlier.
The tablets should be taken at night and can be administered with water or with or without food.
The usual starting dose is 10 to 40 mg daily, administered as a single dose at night.
Your doctor may adjust your dose up to a maximum of 80 mg per day, administered as a single dose at night.
Your doctor may prescribe lower doses, especially if you are taking certain medications listed above or have certain kidney disorders.
Use in children and adolescents
The efficacy and safety of use in children have not been established. Therefore, the use of Simvastatin Pensa 20 mg is not recommended in children.
Use in elderly patients
It is not necessary to adjust the dose.
Like all medicines, Simvastatin 20mg can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
