Colestipol is an ion exchange resin, a polymer that contains certain anions, which when administered orally it has the ability to form insoluble complexes with bile salts present in the intestine, which is eliminated in the faeces. Markedly lowers cholesterol levels plasma (15-30%), as well as LDL. It does not affect, and may even increase, the levels of triglycerides. The effects on HDL are minimal. Adults
The usual dose for adults is 1 to 6 sachets of Colestid per day (5 to 30 g of colestipol hydrochloride per day), to be taken orally, once or in two doses, with several hours interval and always with meals. Treatment is normally started with 1 sachet (5 g) of colestipol hydrochloride 1 or 2 times a day. If the initial dose is well tolerated, your doctor may increase the dose, if necessary, by 5 g per day at intervals of 1-2 months. It is recommended that the dose be increased slowly to minimize the risk of gastrointestinal side effects.
To avoid accidental inhalation or esophageal discomfort, granules for oral suspension should never be taken in their dry form. The granules must be added to a minimum of 100 mL of liquid (for example, water, fruit juice, milk) and mix until obtaining a homogeneous suspension.
It is recommended that the time interval between Colestid administration and any other medication be as long as possible, at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after Colestid administration.
