What is Logynon?

Logynon is a prescription contraceptive pill. It contains two artificial hormones that mimic the activity of natural hormones in the body, which regulate ovulation and other reproductive functions and is available as standard with 21 pills per month, ED with 28 pills (7 placeboes).

The standard 21-day version is taken daily for 3 consecutive weeks, followed by a 7-day rest period. The ED version contains 7 no-effect pills (placebo) in addition to the 21 functional tablets, which are taken during the 7-day break. The ED version is indicated for those women who prefer not to have a period of 7 without taking the pill, to avoid carelessness.

How does it work?

Logynon is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) containing ethinyl estradiol (EE) and levonorgestrel. COCs have been shown to exert their effect by decreasing gonadotropin secretion to suppress their ovarian activity, to suppress proliferation of the endometrium, and to cause thickening of the cervical mucus.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Logynon is a birth control pill. The active ingredients ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel are the female sex hormones. The combination of these hormones in Logynon prevents pregnancy. Logynon (Nova Step) is available online at our cooperating pharmacies.

Using Logynon is a reliable emergency contraception method. This pill prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation and changing the composition of the lining of the uterus. There is no actual menstruation while taking it, but the menstrual period may cause slight complaints. Therefore, Logynon is also used to treat menstrual cramps, such as excessive blood loss or severe menstrual pain.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Take one contraceptive pill every day, if necessary with a small amount of water. You should take the tablets every day, around the same time.

The blister contains 21 tablets, each marked with a day of the week. You should start by taking the tablet marked with the correct day of the week. Follow the direction of the arrows on the blister. Take one tablet each day until you have finished all 21 tablets, then do not take more tablets for 7 days.

During those 7 days without tablets (what is known as an interruption or week without treatment), the bleeding will have to start. It is called “withdrawal bleeding” and it starts on the 2nd or 3rd day of the week.

On the 8th day after taking the last Logynon tablet (that is, after the seven-day week without treatment), start taking the next blister pack, even if the bleeding has not stopped.

This means that you should start taking the next blister on the same day of the week, and withdrawal bleeding should appear on the same days each month.

If you use Logynonin this way, you will also be protected from pregnancy during the 7 days that you are not taking the tablets.

Warnings and precautions

People with a history of the following medical conditions should not use this pill: blood clots or a disease that affects blood clotting, such as protein C deficiency, protein S deficiency, antithrombin-III deficiency or Factor V; heart attack or stroke; angina pectoris; any condition that increases the risk of arterial clottings, such as severe diabetes, very high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or hyperhomocysteinemia; migraine with aura; breast cancer; or liver disease

People with a history of the following medical conditions may not be suitable for using this pill, or may need to take it under close surveillance: an intestinal disease such as Crohn's ulcerative colitis; systemic lupus erythematosus; hemolytic uremic syndrome; sickle cell anemia; inflammation of the pancreas; high levels of fat in the blood; varicose veins; diabetes; heart problems or high blood pressure; porphyria; or migraines.

It is vitally important to inform your doctor during the questionnaire of any medical condition you have or have had in the past. It is also important to know what the initial symptoms of a blood clot are so that you can seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Logynon can also be used to delay your period. This can be done by continuing straight into the next pack without taking a break. So, instead of taking a seven-day break after your 21 pills, you can start the next pack immediately.

This method is commonly used by women who want to postpone their period for events such as holidays or special occasions. Always consult a healthcare provider before using Logynon for period delay to ensure it’s suitable for your health.

This is a commonly prescribed combined pill that is also suitable for first-time users. It helps regulate periods, reduces menstrual pain, and helps with heavy bleeding. It is also used as a contraceptive and is effective when taken properly and on time. It is also important to complete an assessment before taking Logynon to check if it interacts with any medications you may be taking.

Logynon contains 21 pills followed by a seven-day break during which you do not take any pills. However, Logynon ED (every day) includes 28 pills: 21 active pills and 7 placebo pills to maintain a habit of taking the pill every day.

Both versions are equally effective if taken correctly and on time. The ED version can help reduce the chance of forgetting to start the next pack after the break, as you do not stop taking pills.

If you are over the age of 35 and smoke, you are advised not to take combined oral contraceptives such as Logynon. Smoking increases the risk of serious side effects, such as blood clots, stroke, and heart attack.

If you smoke heavily, a progestogen-only pill may be a safer option. Make sure to always disclose your smoking status when completing the online consultation so that your pharmacist can ensure that it is the right and safest one for you.

Yes, you can switch to Logynon from another pill, but the timing is important. For example, you should start Logynon the day after your last pill or at the end of your seven-day break. No additional contraception is needed if there is no gap between the two methods.

Many women might experience an improvement in acne and oily skin while taking this contraceptive pill. This is due to the regulation of hormones provided by the active ingredients.

However, it is not prescribed specifically for acne treatment; it is prescribed for contraception. For skin-related benefits, other contraceptive pills might be more appropriate—discuss this with your GP or pharmacist.
