Birth control pills have come a long way since they first came out in the 1960’s. There are now several different types of birth control pills available, ensuring that every woman can find one that works for her. Which pill is best is subjective and different for everyone, but millions of women worldwide have safely and effectively prevented pregnancy with Gederal contraceptive pills.

Gedarel 20/150

Gedarel 20 is a low-dose combined hormonal contraceptive pill. When taken correctly it is 99% effective against pregnancy. The synthetic hormones in Gedarel, desogestrel (progesterone) and ethinylestradiol (oestrogen), prevent your ovaries from releasing eggs that can be fertilised. They also help to prevent pregnancy by making it difficult for sperm to reach any eggs and for an egg to attach to the uterus.

When Gederal starts working will depend where you are in your cycle when you begin taking it. If you start taking it within the first 5 days of your period, you should be protected against unwanted pregnancies right away as long as you have regular periods.

To be on the safe side, you may want to use a backup method of birth control for at least 7 days.

Gedarel 30/150

Gedarel 30/150 is the full-dose hormonal version of Gederal. It works the same as Gedarel 20/150 and is taken the same way, but it may cause more side effects than the low-dose version.

What’s the Difference Between Low Dose Hormonal Contraception and Regular Dose Hormonal Contraception?

Low dose birth control has a lower amount of hormones in it than high-dose birth control pills. If they are taken correctly, they can be just as effective as other hormonal birth control pills. Low-dose birth control is ideal for women who find that high-dose birth control causes too many side effects.

When birth control first came out in the 1960’s, it contained higher doses of oestrogen than they do now. Oestrogen is often responsible for the side effects some women experience while taking hormonal birth control. For women who experience side effects, low-dose hormonal birth control can be a better option.

It’s also believed that low-dose birth control has additional health benefits, such as:

  • Reduced risk of ovarian cysts
  • Lower risk of some cancers like ovarian cancer
  • Reduced likelihood of developing heart problems
  • Lower risk of blood clots
  • Reduced chance of ectopic pregnancy
  • For birth control to be effective, you shouldn’t miss a dose and your dose should be taken at the same time each day. With low-dose birth control, it’s especially important to take the pills correctly.

Gedarel Side Effects

Not all women will experience side effects when taking Gedarel. It’s more common when first starting Gederal, especially in higher-dose versions. However, as your body adjusts the symptoms should decrease or go away entirely.

Most side effects tend to be mild, but if yours seem especially severe or continue longer than you think they should, speak to your pharmacist or GP.

  • Irregular bleeding
  • Breast tenderness
  • Nausea
  • Mood swings
  • Headaches
  • Anxiety
  • Cramps or stomach pain

The nausea may be worse in the first few days after you start taking birth control. If you are throwing up or have diarrhoea, your body may not be absorbing as much of the pill as it should. Continue using alternative birth control until your symptoms subside.

Combined hormonal birth control pills also increase your risk for high blood pressure, strokes, and blood clots. This risk becomes higher if you are over 35 or are a smoker. You should have your blood pressure checked at least once per year to ensure you are within healthy ranges.

Can Gederal Stop My Period?

There are ways to take hormonal birth control that can stop your period or make it less frequent.

Continuous Use: Take 1 pill each day without a break. Since there are no breaks, there shouldn’t be any bleeding.

Flexible Extended Use: 1 pill per day is taken for 21 days then stopped for 4 days. The 21 day cycle should start again without any breaks.

Tricycling: 1 pill is taken per day without a break for 9 weeks, followed by a 4-7 day break.

Missed Dose

Missing a dose of your birth control can be worrying, but you may still be okay depending on how many doses you’ve missed. Missing one pill shouldn’t impact the birth control’s effectiveness, but any more than this may put you at risk of pregnancy. You can also be at risk if you start a new pack beyond your recommended break schedule.

If it has been under 48 hours since you took a pill, take a dose as soon as you remember, even if it means taking 2 pills in one day. After this, resume taking your pills at your regular time.

It if has been over 48 hours, speak to your pharmacist or GP about how to resume taking your birth control. There should also be information in the leaflet included with your pills.

Does Gedarel 30/150 or Gedarel 20/150 Cause Weight Gain?

Despite what some women may claim, birth control shouldn’t cause you to suddenly gain weight. Any weight fluctuations you have while taking birth control aer probably due to other factors like water retention, stress, or poor lifestyle habits. If you’re worried about sudden weight gain, speak to your GP.

Can I Use Gedarel 30/150 for Acne?

If you have moderate to severe acne, combined hormonal contraceptive pills can help clear your skin. This is because they balance hormones, reducing the amount of male hormones (androgens) in your system. Fewer androgens means you produce less acne-causing sebum, or oil.
