Tetralysal 300 is an oral medication used to treat acne, and it’s part of a family of antibiotics known as tetracycline antibiotics. It treats skin infections and inflammations caused by bacteria by preventing the bacteria from producing the protein that allows them to reproduce and grow — essentially killing off the bacteria from your skin.
Tetralysal is often prescribed when over-the-counter acne treatments have proven ineffective. Before and after studies and patient reviews have shown Tetralysal to be an effective treatment for adult acne. (About 5% of women and 1% of men continue to have acne over the age of 25 in the UK).
Note: this is not a suitable treatment for pregnant or breastfeeding women or anyone with a liver or kidney disease (women are sometimes prescribed erythromycin instead). Tetralysal can also make oral contraceptives ineffective during the first 10 days of treatment, so extra precaution is needed.
