About Duac Gel
Duac Gel is a highly effective topical treatment specifically designed for mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Acne vulgaris occurs when hair follicles become blocked and inflamed due to an excess of oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria, leading to the formation of papules, pustules, comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), nodules, and cysts. Duac Gel helps combat these acne symptoms, clearing breakouts and preventing future skin impurities.

Duac Once Daily Gel is available in two strengths: Duac 3% (20mg) and Duac 5% (50mg). Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, this acne treatment is applied once a day and is part of the anti-acne preparations group, specifically designed to manage acne vulgaris symptoms. Its dual formula is clinically proven to provide visible results in as little as 2 to 5 weeks.
Duac Gel combines two powerful active ingredients: clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide.
- Clindamycin is a potent antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of acne-causing bacteria. It has a bacteriostatic effect against Propionibacterium acnes (now called Cutibacterium acnes), which is the primary bacterium responsible for acne. This ingredient reduces the bacterial load on the skin, helping to control inflammation and acne flare-ups.
- Benzoyl Peroxide is a well-known antibacterial and keratolytic agent. It helps by exfoliating the skin, unclogging pores, and killing the bacteria that contribute to acne formation. Benzoyl peroxide also reduces the production of comedones, which are the blocked pores leading to blackheads and whiteheads.
Together, clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide form a dual-action therapy that:
- Kills bacteria causing acne
- Reduces oil buildup in the pores
- Prevents the formation of blackheads and whiteheads
- Reduces inflammation associated with acne
- Effective for All Acne-Prone Areas: Duac Gel is not only effective on facial acne but also works on acne affecting the neck, upper back, and shoulders. These areas can often be difficult to treat but respond well to Duac Gel.
- Preventative Action: In addition to treating current acne, Duac Gel helps prevent future breakouts by keeping pores clear and reducing oil buildup.
- Topical Alternative to Oral Antibiotics: For individuals who prefer not to take oral antibiotics for acne, Duac Gel offers a convenient and effective topical solution. This makes it an excellent choice for both teenagers and adults with mild to moderate acne.
- Improves Appearance of Acne Scars: Regular use of Duac Gel may help reduce the appearance of acne scars by minimizing the severity of acne and promoting a smoother complexion over time.
Proper application is essential for achieving the best results from Duac Gel.
-
Cleanse Your Skin:
Begin by thoroughly washing the affected area with a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser to remove dirt, oil, or makeup. Rinse with lukewarm water and gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel. -
Apply a Thin Layer:
Squeeze a small amount of Duac Gel onto your fingertip. For the face, use a fingertip amount from the tip to the first joint. For larger areas, like the back, use two and a half fingertip-sized amounts. Spread the gel evenly across all acne-prone areas, not just on visible pimples. -
Avoid Excessive Application:
If the gel isn’t absorbing well, you may be using too much. Start with a small amount and gradually increase as tolerated. Too much gel can cause irritation. -
Moisturize if Necessary:
If your skin becomes too dry or starts peeling, apply an oil-free moisturizer after the gel has dried. You may also reduce the frequency of application if irritation persists. -
Daily Application:
Apply Duac Gel once daily, preferably in the evening. Consistent daily use is essential for the best results, with visible improvements typically seen between 2 to 5 weeks. -
Prevent Staining:
Since Duac Gel contains benzoyl peroxide, be cautious of contact with colored fabrics, as it may bleach them. Ensure your clothing and bedding are protected if applying the gel before bed. -
Wash Hands After Application:
Once you've applied the gel, wash your hands thoroughly to avoid spreading the product to other areas of your skin or fabrics. -
Optional Makeup Application:
Once the product has dried completely, you may apply non-greasy makeup if desired.
Always follow your healthcare provider's recommendations for use. If you are unsure about how much or how often to apply, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Avoid using Duac Gel for longer than 12 consecutive weeks unless directed by your healthcare provider.
While Duac Gel is well-tolerated by most users, some individuals may experience mild side effects, especially during the initial stages of treatment.
The most common side effects include:
- Dryness or peeling of the skin
- Mild irritation or redness
- Stinging or burning sensation upon application
To minimize irritation, consider using an oil-free moisturizer or reducing the frequency of application to every other day. If these symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional.
Serious Side Effects
Although rare, stop using Duac Gel and seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Signs of an allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing)
- Severe skin irritation, including excessive peeling or burning
- Persistent diarrhea or abdominal cramps (which may indicate a condition called pseudomembranous colitis)
SPECIAL NOTE – Because this product contains a peroxide product, it has the potential to stain any fabrics that it comes into contact with. If applying this gel immediately before bed, then it is sometimes a good idea to ensure your bedclothes are sufficiently protected from contact with the gel.
Duac Gel is suitable for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older who are experiencing mild to moderate acne. It is particularly effective for individuals dealing with persistent blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed pustules. Duac Gel is not recommended for individuals with severe cystic acne, who may require stronger treatments or a combination of therapies.
Precautions
- Sun Protection: Since benzoyl peroxide can increase skin sensitivity, it’s essential to use sunscreen or limit exposure to sunlight while using Duac Gel.
- Consult a Doctor: Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions for use, especially if you're using other acne medications or treatments.
