Vaniqa Cream is a licensed prescription medicine in the UK. It is not a hair removal product in itself, but works alongside your existing hair removal routine to slow the speed at which hair grows back. It is suitable for women who find that unwanted facial hair significantly affects their quality of life and who have been assessed as appropriate candidates by a registered prescriber.

Vaniqa Cream contains the active ingredient eflornithine at a concentration of 11.5% weight for weight. It is an enzyme inhibitor cream that is applied directly to areas of the face and adjacent areas under the chin where unwanted hair growth is a concern.

It is licensed in the UK specifically for use in women aged 18 and over for the reduction of unwanted facial hair. It is a Prescription Only Medicine, which means it cannot be purchased over the counter. A clinical consultation with a registered prescriber is required before it can be supplied.

Eflornithine cream has been available and studied extensively in the context of hirsutism management. It does not remove hair that is already present. Instead, it targets the biological mechanism that drives hair growth, slowing the rate of regrowth noticeably over time. Most women begin to see a visible difference within eight to twelve weeks of consistent use.

The active ingredient eflornithine works by inhibiting an enzyme called ornithine decarboxylase, which is found in hair follicles and plays a central role in regulating the rate at which hair grows. By blocking this enzyme, Vaniqa Cream disrupts the normal cycle of hair growth at the follicular level, causing hair to grow back more slowly and, for many women, more finely.

Crucially, Vaniqa Cream does not destroy the hair follicle and does not permanently remove hair. The effect is sustained only while the cream is being used regularly. If treatment is stopped, hair typically returns to its previous rate of growth within eight weeks.

The cream is absorbed into the skin locally at the site of application and is not intended to have a systemic effect on hormone levels. It works directly within the follicle rather than via the bloodstream, which is why it is applied topically rather than taken orally.

Vaniqa Cream is most effective when used as part of a combined approach. Women using it alongside a regular hair removal method such as threading, waxing, or laser treatment tend to experience the greatest improvement in the appearance of unwanted facial hair.

Apply Vaniqa Cream twice daily to the affected areas of the face and adjacent areas under the chin. Leave at least eight hours between applications. The cream should be applied thinly and rubbed in thoroughly until no visible residue remains on the skin.

Wait at least five minutes after any hair removal procedure before applying the cream. Do not wash the treated area for at least four hours after application. Cosmetics or sunscreen can be applied over the cream once it has dried.

Vaniqa Cream is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, nostrils, mouth, and any broken or irritated skin. Wash your hands after each application.

Consistency is essential. The cream must be used regularly, twice daily, to maintain its effect. Occasional or irregular use significantly reduces the benefit. If you miss an application, do not double the next dose. Simply continue with your usual schedule.

The cream should be used in conjunction with your existing hair removal method. It is not a standalone treatment for hair removal. Results become noticeable over weeks, not days, so patience and adherence to the routine are important.

Licensed Formulation

Vaniqa Cream is available as a single licensed formulation containing eflornithine 11.5% weight for weight (equivalent to 15% eflornithine hydrochloride monohydrate). It is available in the following pack sizes in the UK market.

Duration of Use

The cream should be applied twice daily on an ongoing basis for as long as the treatment effect is desired. If no improvement is seen after four months of regular use, the prescriber should be consulted, as continued use is unlikely to be beneficial in the absence of a clinical response.

Like all medicines, Vaniqa Cream can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most commonly reported side effects are local skin reactions at the site of application.

1. Acne or acne-like skin changes
2. Skin tingling or stinging
3. Burning sensation on application
4. Dry or flaky skin
5. Skin redness or rash
6. Itching at the application site

Uncommon Side Effects (May Affect Up to 1 in 100 People)

1. Worsening of existing skin conditions such as folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles)
2. Ingrown hairs
3. Skin swelling
4. Bleeding or bruising at the application site

If you experience severe skin irritation, signs of an allergic reaction such as facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or widespread rash, stop using the cream and seek medical attention promptly. Inform your prescriber at your next consultation if you notice any persistent or troublesome side effects.

Vaniqa Cream is for external use only. It should not be applied near the eyes, nostrils, or mouth. Avoid applying it to broken or irritated skin.

It is suitable for women of all skin tones and types. A prescriber will assess your individual circumstances during your consultation before determining whether this treatment is appropriate for you.

Who Should Not Use Vaniqa Cream

Vaniqa Cream is not suitable for everyone. It should not be used by the following groups.

1. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, unless the prescriber considers the potential benefit to outweigh any risk
2. Women who are breastfeeding
3. Girls under the age of 18, as safety and efficacy have not been established in this age group
4. Anyone with a known hypersensitivity to eflornithine or any of the excipients in the formulation

Vaniqa Cream is not intended for use on the scalp, body, or other areas beyond the face and adjacent chin area. It should not be used by men. Please inform your prescriber of all medicines you are currently taking and of any relevant medical history before starting treatment.
