Norethisterone Tablets

Norethisterone is a progestogenic hormone. This hormone, along with estrogens, plays an important role in the menstrual cycle and ovulation. One of the possible consequences of a hormonal imbalance is menstrual disorders. Norethisterone can be administered in several ways. The doctor will indicate which treatment is most suitable for you. In most cases, Norethisterone is only taken during the second half of the menstrual cycle. If you want to delay menstruation, you will have to start taking the tablet three days before the expected start date and continue for up to two weeks. For endometriosis or menopausal complaints, Norethisterone is usually taken continuously and for a longer period. Norethisterone is swallowed without chewing, helping with plenty of liquid. Take it preferably during meals.

About Norethisterone Tablets

Norethisterone should not be used to delay your period for more than 17 days without a face-to-face consultation with your GP. It should not be used more regularly than every 4 months.

Norethisterone is also present in some contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapies for menopause. Norethisterone 5mg tablets should not be used for hormone replacement and do not offer any contraceptive cover. Your normal contraceptive method should still be used whilst you take Norethisterone 5mg tablets.

Norethisterone should be taken three times daily starting 3 days before your period is due until you wish your period to resume. Once Norethisterone has been stopped, a normal period will be experienced within 2 – 3 days. Norethisterone should not be taken if you are or could be pregnant. Norethisterone does not have any special dietary measures, it's absorption and effects are not changed by food or alcohol.

People also ask

What is Norethisterone?

Norethisterone is a progestogenic hormone. This hormone, along with estrogens, plays an important role in the menstrual cycle and ovulation. One of the possible consequences of a hormonal imbalance is menstrual disorders. Norethisterone restores hormonal balance and reduces symptoms.

How does it work?

The most important effects are suppression of ovulation and changes in cervical mucus, which becomes thicker and more viscous, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate. Unlike other steroids, norethisterone does not induce significant changes in levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, or low-density and very-low-density lipoproteins. However, a reduction in serum levels of high-density lipoprotein is observed, although the ratio of total cholesterol to high-density cholesterol is not altered

What are the benefits of taking it?

Norethisterone is prescribed, among other things, for different types of HRT in cases of menstrual disorders, absence of menstruation, severe menstrual pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, endometriosis, and discomfort of menopause. Norethisterone can also be used to change the date of menstruation.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again.

Remember to take your medicine. Your doctor will indicate the duration of your treatment with Primolut-Nor. Do not stop the treatment earlier, as the desired effect may not be obtained.

The tablets should be swallowed whole with some liquid.

In case you need additional contraceptive protection, you should use non-hormonal contraceptive methods (barrier, for example, a condom).

For the treatment of secondary amenorrhea (lack of menstruation):

Your doctor will tell you the dose you should take and should tell you to take estrogen medication for about 14 days before starting treatment with Primolut-Nor. Thereafter you will take between 5 and 10 mg of norethisterone acetate per day (maximum of one Primolut-Nor 10 mg tablet, once per day) for 10 days, thus ending the treatment. Menstruation will occur a few days after taking the last tablet.

In patients with endogenous estrogen production, 5 mg of norethisterone acetate will be administered twice a day, from day 16 to 25 of the cycle, taking into account that the first day of menstruation is considered the first day of the cycle.

For the treatment of endometriosis (growth of the endometrium - the tissue that lines the uterus - outside the uterus):

Treatment should begin between day 1 and day 5 of the cycle with 5 mg of norethisterone acetate twice daily. In case of staining, the dose can be increased up to 10 mg of norethisterone acetate twice a day (one tablet of Primolut-Nor 10 mg twice a day), decreasing to the initial dose if bleeding (or staining) stops. The treatment must be maintained for at least 4 to 6 months. With the uninterrupted daily intake, you will probably have neither ovulations nor menstruations.

Like all medicines, Primolut-Nor can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Adverse effects are more frequent during the first months of treatment and decrease with the duration of treatment.
