Cetirizine Allergy Relief Tablets, also branded as Zirtek, is a non-drowsy, anti-histamine medication used to treat allergic reaction symptoms that arise from pollen-related allergies like hayfever, or airborne allergies such as house dust and pet allergies, without the tired and fatigued feeling caused by some other anti-histamines.

People also ask

What is Cetirizine/Zirtek?

Cetirizine is an orally taken second-generation histamine which has proven beneficial in the treatment of various allergic symptoms, such as sneezing, coughing, nasal congestion, hives, and other symptoms

How does it work?

Cetirizine works selectively on peripheral histamine-1 (H-1) receptors which are located outside of the brain and spinal cord. Since it acts on peripheral histamine receptors, cetirizine is much less likely to cause drowsiness compared with some older antihistamines.
Histamine is a chemical that is released due to an allergen, making it responsible for many of the symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as swelling, sneezing, and itching. Cetirizine binds to histamine receptors and prevents histamine's affects on the receptors and reduces allergy symptoms.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Helps to reduce hayfever related symptoms. Only needs to be taken once a day. Doesn't cause tiredness.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or healthcare professional has told you. Check with your doctor if you are not sure. Tablets need to be swallowed with a glass of water.

Children aged 6 to 12 years: the recommended dose is 5mg (half a tablet) twice daily.
Adults and children aged 12 years and over: the recommended dose is 10mg (one tablet) once daily.

Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment: The recommended dose is 5mg (half a tablet) once a day.
