Everything you need to know about HRT

HRT or Hormone Replacement Therapy is targeted at women who have reached the menopause sometimes also called, ‘the change’.  The menopause is a natural process and marks the end of a female’s reproductive processes resulting in the reduction and finally the loss of two key hormones, oestrogen and progesterone.

Whilst the menopause is a natural process, it can last for many years and has some very unpleasant side effects associated with it. These include:-

  • Sudden hot flushes and sweats particularly at night
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex
  • Increased frequency of urinary tract infections
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty in concentration and memory problems
  • Reduced sex drive

For many women, the menopause strikes during their late forties and early fifties, a time in their lives when they are usually at their busiest contending with teenage children, elderly parents whilst often juggling a career.  The torment of menopausal symptoms can make daily life almost impossible to cope with.  HRT was invented to reduce the symptoms of the menopause, thus bringing relief and normal functionality to millions of women around the world.

What is Hormone Replacement Therapy?
HRT is a way of replacing the female hormones as they diminish through the middle years.  HRT contains a combination of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone although some medicines are progesterone only.  It can be administered in a number of ways but is not suitable for all women.  A discussion with your GP can help determine whether HRT is appropriate for you.

How do you take HRT?
HRT is offered in myriad different forms, tablets, gels, skin patches, vaginal creams and pessaries.

What are Evorel Patches?
Evorel patches offer a continuous stream of oestrogen-only HRT via the skin into the bloodstream and only need changing twice a week.  They are one of the many options a GP may offer women seeking support through the menopause.
