What is Livial?
Livial belongs to the group of drugs for Hormone Replacement Therapy. Contains tibolone, a synthetic sex hormone. Livial is indicated in postmenopausal women in which at least 12 months have elapsed since their last natural period. Livial is used for the relief of post-menopausal symptoms During menopause, the amount of estrogen produced by the woman's body decreases. This can cause symptoms like sweating and hot flashes. Livial relieves these symptoms after menopause. Livial will only be prescribed if the patient's symptoms seriously hinder his daily life.
How does it work?
Following oral administration, the main active Livial tablet ingredient, tibolone, is rapidly metabolized into three components, which all three contribute to the pharmacodynamic profile of Livial. Two of the metabolites (3α-OH-tibolone and 3β-OHtibolone) have estrogenic activity, while the third metabolite (Δ4 isomer of tibolone) has progestogenic and androgenic activities. Livial replaces the loss of estrogen production in postmenopausal women and relieves menopause symptoms.
What are the benefits of taking it?
Livial is used to treat symptoms of menopause, including:
- Hot flushes
- Night sweats
- Sleep disorders
- Dryness of the mucous membranes (eyes, vagina)
- Mood swings, nervousness, depression, irritability.
In some cases, Livial is also prescribed to prevent osteoporosis years after menopause. Livial is especially ideal for women experiencing natural menopause who have not had a period in more than 12 months and who have not had their ovaries removed. If you are going through menopause, but are still having your period, you may need to take a different hormone replacement medicine.
How do I use it and its dosage?
Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again. For more information, please see the patient information leaflet.
How much Livial you should take and for how long
Your doctor will prescribe the lowest possible dose to treat your symptoms for the shortest possible time. Consult your doctor if you think the dose is too high or too low.
Unless your doctor has prescribed a different dose, the usual dose is one tablet a day after a meal, preferably at the same time each day. Do not take a progestogen preparation in addition to Livial.
How to take Livial
Take the tablets with a little water or another drink, preferably at the same time each day.
What to consider when starting treatment with Livial
If you went through menopause naturally, you should start taking Livial one year after your last menstrual bleeding. If your ovaries have been removed by surgery, you can start taking Livial immediately.
If you plan to take Livial and have had irregular or unexpected vaginal bleeding, please consult your doctor before starting treatment with Tibolona Aristo so that the possibility of any malignancy can be excluded.
If you wish to switch from medication to Tibolona Aristo and were previously taking estrogen and progestin medication, please ask your doctor what consideration should be taken into account.
How long should you take Livial
Your doctor will aim to make treatment as short as possible. Usually, an improvement in symptoms is achieved within a few weeks.
