People also ask

What is Novofem?

Novofem is a form of estrogen, a female sex hormone that regulates many processes in the body. Norethindrone is a form of progesterone, an important female hormone to regulate ovulation and menstruation. Novofem is a combination medicine used to treat menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and vaginal changes, and to prevent osteoporosis (bone loss) in menopausal women. Novofem and norethindrone can also be used for purposes not mentioned in the Novofem guide.

How does it work?

Estradiol: The active substance, synthetic 17b-estradiol, is chemically and biologically identical to endogenous human estradiol. It replaces the loss of estrogen production that occurs during the postmenopause of women and alleviates the symptoms of menopause. Estrogens prevent bone loss due to menopause or ovariectomy.

Norethisterone acetate: Synthetic progestin. Estrogens promote the growth of the endometrium, whereby unopposed estrogens increase the risk of hyperplasia and endometrium cancer. Adding a progestogen reduces the risk of endometrial hyperplasia induced by estrogens in non-hysterectomised women.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Novofem Tablet uses and benefits include being indicated for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. This includes:

  • Hot flushes;
  • Excessive sweating, night sweats;
  • Vaginal dryness and dry mouth and/or eyes;
  • Anxiety;
  • Mood swings or depression
  • Sleep disorders;
  • Decreased sexual desire;
  • Bone loss (osteoporosis).

In addition to estradiol (to reduce menopausal symptoms), Novofem also contains norethisterone. This substance protects the uterus from the side effects that can be caused by the administration of estradiol. Novofem is particularly suitable for women who still have (irregular) periods and whose uterus is still present.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Always take these HRT tablets exactly as your doctor tells you. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions.

If you are not taking any other hormone replacement therapy, treatment with Novofem can start it on the day that you consider convenient. If you are already taking other types of hormone replacement therapy, your doctor will tell you when to start the Novofem treatment.

One tablet will be taken once a day, at approximately the same time each day.

Each box contains 28 tablets

  • Days 1-16 Take one red tablet every day for 16 days
  • Days 17-28 Take one white tablet every day for 12 days

Take the tablets with a glass of water.

Once you have finished the box, start a new one by continuing the treatment without interruption.

Menstruation (period) bleeding usually occurs at the beginning of a new box.

Check with your doctor if you do not show improvement after 3 months of treatment. You should only continue treatment when the benefit outweighs the risk.

If you need surgery or medical tests or if you will be on bed rest, you may need to stop using this medicine for a short time. Any doctor or surgeon who treats you should know that you are using Novofem and norethindrone.

Your doctor should check your progress regularly (every 3 to 6 months) to determine if you should continue with this treatment. Self-examine your breasts monthly for lumps and get a mammogram every year while using Novofem and norethindrone.

Store at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
