About Valaciclovir Tablets

Valaciclovir is an antiviral tablet which is used to treat infections from the herpes simplex virus (HSV). If taken at the first sign of an outbreak, it can cut the outbreak short or stop it completely. It simply involves taking a tablets twice per day, and so is a straightforward and convenient treatment.

There are two types of herpes infections. HSV-1 causes cold sores around the mouth. HSV-2 causes genital herpes. Valaciclovir is highly effective against both strains of the virus. The HSV causes blisters and scabs on the mucous tissues of the mouth and genitals. Valaciclovir helps existing blisters to heal and prevents the virus from spreading.

Valaciclovir is closely related to aciclovir, another antiviral tablet. In fact, the Valaciclovir tablet is converted into aciclovir when it is metabolised. This makes it a prodrug. It attacks the HSV in the same way as aciclovir, but delivers the antiviral agent more efficiently. This means that fewer capsules need to be taken.

People also ask

What is Valaciclovir?

Valaciclovir belongs to a group of medicines called antivirals. Functioning as a sexual health treatment medication, it works by stopping or stopping the growth of viruses called herpes simplex (HSV), chickenpox zoster (VZV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV).

Valaciclovir can be used to:

  • Treat herpes zoster (in adults).
  • Treat HSV infections of the skin and genital herpes (in adults and adolescents over 12 years old). It is also used to prevent these infections from coming back.
  • Treat fever (in adults and adolescents over 12 years old).
  • Prevent CMV infection after organ transplants (in adults and adolescents over 12 years old).

How does it work?

Valaciclovir is rapidly converted to acyclovir, which inhibits the synthesis of viral DNA. To exert its effect, acyclovir must be phosphorylated intracellularly, which is achieved by a viral thymidine kinase that transforms it into monophosphate. Subsequently, this monophosphate is converted to diphosphate by means of a cellular guanylate kinase and finally to the triphosphate by means of various cellular enzymes. Once acyclovir triphosphate is synthesized, it selectively inhibits viral DNA polymerase by competing with deoxyguanosine triphosphate. Inhibition of viral DNA synthesis only occurs in infected cells, whereas DNA synthesis in normal cells is not affected. Inhibition of viral DNA synthesis prevents virus replication. Acyclovir is active against various types of herpes simplex virus and against the varicella-zoster virus. Antiviral activity depends on several factors, in particular the time between infection and treatment. The resistance of herpes and herpes zoster viruses to acyclovir can be caused by mutation of the genes that encode thymidine kinase or DNA polymerase. In the first case, a mutation of the virus thymidine kinase can reduce or prevent the formation of thymidine triphosphate and, consequently, acyclovir triphosphate. In the second case, DNA polymerase becomes capable of differentiating between acyclovir triphosphate or deoxyguanosine triphosphate whereby DNA synthesis can be carried out.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Valaciclovir is a varicella-zoster, cytomegalic, and herpes simplex antiviral drug. Valaciclovir is used to treat or prevent episodes of the herpes virus, including genital herpes or shingles (herpes zoster) in adults. Valaciclovir is used to reduce the chance that an adult with genital herpes will transmit this virus to an uninfected sexual partner. Valaciclovir is also used for the treatment of cold sores in adults and children at least 12 years of age, or of chickenpox in children from 2 to 18 years of age. There is no cure for herpes, and Valaciclovir will not prevent you from developing symptoms in the future. If you have genital herpes, your sexual partner may be infected even though you have no symptoms. A medical test is the only way to accurately diagnose genital herpes.
