Weight Loss Management: How Does It Work?
Summer is nearly here which means we’re all ditching the bulky jumpers for clothing more appropriate for warmer weather. This can be hard for some people to cope with because of their weight. They may feel uncomfortable in more revealing clothing, not to mention swim wear. Body positivity is important, and you shouldn’t want to lose weight just because you think you’ll look better at the beach. Instead, weight loss should be about reaching a weight and fitness level that boosts your overall health. An added benefit of achieving these goals is that you’ll look better than ever in your summer wardrobe.
Losing weight can be very difficult, especially for people who are significantly overweight. If you’re one of the many who have tried every type of diet and fitness fads without success, there are medical options available to help you get to a healthier weight. Alongside a weight loss management pain, weight loss medicines can give you the boost you need to get to your goal weight.
Natural Ways to Lose Weight
Most of us know that the best way to lose weight and maintain this loss is by exercising and eating well. With so many temptations surrounding us, this can be hard to do. We also have very busy lives these days and the cost-of-living crisis has made healthy eating more expensive than ever. However, when it comes to natural ways to lose weight, diet and exercise are paramount. You don’t have to deprive yourself or become a body builder to eat well and stay fit. Restrictive diets often fail because they aren’t sustainable. It’s all about moderation and balance.
Your diet should be full of fulfilling options that are packed with nutrients rather than calories. One of the biggest tips out there is having lots of different colours, flavours and textures on your plate. You can still have your favourite treats from time to time, but they shouldn’t make up the bulk of your diet.
A typical weight loss diet should include:
- Whole grains
- High fibre foods
- Leafy greens
- Fruit
- Lentils and legumes
- Fatty fish
- Dark chocolate
- Lean poultry
- Oats
- Olive oil
Limit your intake of processed sugar, baked goods, full-fat dairy, and saturated fat. You also shouldn’t eat late at night because your body isn’t able to metabolise calories as well when you’re sleeping. For exercise, find an activity you enjoy so you can keep up with it. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise and can be adjusted to suit your abilities. Swimming is another low-impact form of cardio that can help you lose weight.
Other Tips to Lose Weight
- Support and encouragement are proven to help you stay on track with your weight loss goals. Ask a friend or loved one to join in on your weight loss or in your favourite physical activity for motivation. You should also set achievable weight loss targets and give yourself a break if you don’t always reach them.
- Drinking water can help you feel fuller, so you won’t overeat at mealtimes or snack between meals. If you don’t like the taste of water, throw in a lemon or lime or buy a water bottle with a fruit infuser.
- When you do eat, do so slowly. Concentrate on your bites and really enjoy the flavours and textures. It can take a while for your stomach to alert your brain that you’re full so chewing deliberately can keep you from overeating.
- A good night’s sleep is another essential part of losing weight. When you don’t get enough sleep, hormones responsible for feeling hungry can increase. People also tend to crave fattier foods when they’re tired because the body needs the energy it isn’t getting from restful sleep.
- You might think skipping meals like breakfast will lower how many calories you eat in a day, but you’d be wrong. Your body can end up storing fat if it thinks it’s being starved of the calories it needs for energy. You’re also more likely to eat too much when you do finally eat.
- In addition to eating a healthy breakfast, hold off on your morning coffee or tea until you’ve eaten. Caffeine on an empty stomach can raise a stress hormone called cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels can make you feel hungry and impact your blood sugar levels. Drinking your coffee after eating will help you produce fewer fat cells.
Weight Loss Tablets
If you’ve been making all the right choices but you’re still not losing weight, weight loss tablets may be able to help. Xenical is the brand name for Orlistat, a medication that has been used for over 20 years in the UK to help people with obesity lose weight. Research has shown that people using Orlistat/Xenical Capsules are twice as likely to lose at least 10% of their body weight within a year.
Orlistat should only be used by people who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI of 28 or higher who are at risk of developing weight related diseases like diabetes. Xenical/Orlistat won’t give you instant weight loss and will not work unless you use them alongside diet and exercise.
It works by stopping your body from absorbing a third of the dietary fat you consume. It attaches to enzymes called lipase which is responsible for breaking down fat to be later used as energy for your body. Orlistat blocks lipase from doing this to all the fat you eat during a meal. This fat is instead passed through your stool.
