Migraine With Or Without Aura: What’s The Difference?
It is estimated that around 6 million people suffer from migraines in the UK with more women experiencing migraines than men. We sell all the main migraine relief brands including Sumatriptan tablets, Zolmitriptan tablets and Rizatriptan tablets all available online from your trusted UK pharmacist.
What is the cause of migraine?
The exact cause of migraine is unknown but they are thought to be the result of abnormal brain activity which temporarily affects blood vessels and nerve signals in the brain. Some people seem genetically predisposed to migraines. Most migraine sufferers understand that they have certain triggers which they learn to avoid. Known triggers include:-
- Emotional such as stress, anxiety or tension.
- Dietary includes dairy products, citrus fruit, tea and coffee.
- Medicinal - certain medications can trigger migraines.
- Environmental such as bright lights, smoky rooms and flickering screens.
Migraines can present in two ways, migraine with aura and migraine without aura so what is an aura? A migraine with aura is also sometimes called a classic migraine and is a recurring headache that strikes at the same time or after a sensory disturbance called aura. Aura can include flashing lights, and blind spots or affect the vision in other ways – some sufferers experience tingling in the hands or face. For many people, an aura can be an early warning of what is to come.
Migraine treatment
Migraines are very individual and affect people in different ways although they do have common symptoms. There are plenty of oral migraine relief treatments on the market and different brands suit different people. The timing of the medication is usually just as important as the choice of drug. Most migraine treatments cannot prevent migraine but aim to manage the distressing and painful symptoms. Many people also manage a migraine by going to bed in a darkened room and avoiding light, activity or external stimuli until the episode has passed.
