What is Movicol?

Movicol is a gastrointestinal medication that comes in a powdered form. Movicol sachets and liquid consist of macrogol, which is a laxative. Other ingredients in Movicol include sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and potassium chloride.

The medicine is used to treat constipation in adults and adolescents to help them reach comfortable bowel movement. Movicol is also recommended for the treatment of more severe constipation known as faecal impaction.

How Does Movicol Work?

The active ingredient in Movicol is macrogol, an osmotic laxative. As an inert substance, Macrogol passes through the gut without absorbing into the body. This helps macrogol retain water in the bowel, which helps relieve constipation.

The increased water content and volume of stools in the bowel make the stool softer and easier to pass and stimulates the bowel muscles to push stools for a comfortable bowel movement. Other ingredients such as sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and potassium chloride (electrolytes) are added to Movicol to ensure that the body does not gain or lose large amounts of sodium, potassium or water.

What Are the Benefits of Taking Movicol?

Movicol is recommended by doctors as a laxative to relieve different kinds of constipation conditions. Movicol can:

  • Help people regain a comfortable bowel movement even if they have been constipated for a long time.
  • Relieve severe forms of constipation known as faecal impaction caused by chronic constipation.

How Do I Use Movicol?

Movicol comes in a powdered form. It is consumed by dissolving the contents of the sachet in 125 ml of water. Once the powder is added, stir thoroughly until all of it has dissolved. This is indicated by a clear or translucent solution. For severe constipation, it might be easier to dissolve 8 sachets of Movicol in 1 litre of water.

Movicol does not affect your bowel movements immediately and can take up to 2 days to show results. In the case of faecal impaction, you should consult your doctor if you do not see any results within 3 days or your doctor’s recommended time.

Typically, Movicol is taken for up to two weeks for chronic constipation unless your doctor recommends otherwise.

Movicol Dosage

Movicol should be used exactly as directed by your physician. Typically, for constipation, Movicol is taken 1 to 3 times per day depending on the severity of your condition.

For faecal impaction, which is a much more severe type of constipation, your doctor may recommend up to 8 sachets in a day. It is essential to confirm if you have this condition before starting this treatment. If you are taking 8 sachets a day, you should take them within 6 hours for up to 3 days or as recommended by your doctor. Consult your doctor if you have any heart conditions or other medical history.

The usual treatment of Movicol lasts up to 2 weeks. However, Doctors may prescribe a long-term treatment for constipation caused by Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
