Lyxumia injectable solution is indicated in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults to achieve glycemic control, in combination with hypoglycemic drugs and/or basal insulin when these, together with diet and exercise, do not provide adequate glycemic control.
Lyxumia injectable solution is indicated in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults to achieve glycemic control, in combination with hypoglycemic drugs and/or basal insulin when these, together with diet and exercise, do not provide adequate glycemic control.
The main active ingredient in Lyxumia, Lixisenatide is a selective GLP-1 receptor agonist. The GLP-1 receptor is the target of native GLP-1, an endogenous incretin-like hormone that enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion by pancreatic beta cells.
The action of lixisenatide is mediated by a specific interaction with GLP-1 receptors that leads to an increase in intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Lixisenatide stimulates insulin secretion when the blood glucose level increases, but not in normoglycemia, which reduces the risk of hypoglycemia. In addition, it suppresses the secretion of glucagon. In the case of hypoglycemia, the rescue mechanism is maintained by glucagon secretion.
Lixisenatide slows gastric emptying, reducing the rate of incorporation of glucose from food into the circulatory system.
Lyxumia contains the active substance lixisenatide. It is an injectable medication that is used to help your body control its blood sugar level when it is too high. It is prescribed to adult patients with type 2 diabetes.
Lyxumia is used together with other diabetes medicines when there is insufficient control of your blood sugar levels, such as:
oral antidiabetics (such as metformin, pioglitazone, sulfonylureas) and/or, basal insulin, a type of insulin that works all-day.
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor, pharmacist or nurse has told you. If in doubt, ask your doctor, pharmacist
Like all medicines, Lyxumia can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Some serious allergic reactions (such as anaphylaxis) have been reported infrequently in patients receiving Lyxumia. You should seek medical attention immediately if you experience symptoms such as swelling of the face, tongue, or throat that makes it difficult for you to breathe.
Stop giving Lyxumia and contact your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following serious side effects:
Persistent and severe abdominal pain (stomach area) that can reach your back, as well as nausea and vomiting, as this can be a sign of your inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis).
The most frequently reported side effects with Lyxumia that may affect more than 1 in 10 users (frequency: very common) were nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting. These side effects were mostly mild and generally disappeared over time.
