Combodart
Combodart is used in men to treat an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) - a non-cancerous growth of the prostate caused by overproduction of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, in patients already controlled with dutasteride and tamsulosin administered to the time. Combodart is a combination of two different medicines called dutasteride and tamsulosin. Dutasteride belongs to the group of medicines called 5-alpha reductase enzyme inhibitors and tamsulosin belongs to the group of medicines called alpha-blockers. As the prostate enlarges, it can lead to urinary problems such as difficulty in the flow of urine and a need to urinate more frequently. It can also cause the urine stream to be less and less strong.

Combodart (Tamsulosin/dutasteride) is a combination medication that is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate gland.
Combodart (Tamsulosin/dutasteride) is a combination medication that is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate gland. It contains two active ingredients: dutasteride, a drug called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, and tamsulosin, an alpha-blocker. Combodart works by inhibiting the production of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In the absence of DHT, the prostate gland shrinks and allows urine to flow freely. Combodart relieves urinary discomfort, such as difficulty urinating, increased frequency of urination, and weak urinary flow.
The uses and benefits of Combodart include working as a dual-action medicine to function as an enlarged prostate treatment. On the one hand, Dutasteride works by decreasing the concentration of DHT (Dihydrotestosterone, a male hormone) in the blood. DHT concentration is the main cause of an enlarged prostate. By inhibiting this hormone, hyperplasia gradually improves, avoiding having to undergo surgery.
Tamsulosin blocks alpha-1 receptors, structures of the nervous system that when excited produce a contraction of the muscles associated with them. These receptors are found in the smooth muscles of the bladder and prostate, and by blocking it, contraction is avoided and urinary flow is improved.
Known as a Genitourinary Treatment, Combodart is used to treat BPH in men. An enlarged prostate is usually due to excessive DHT production. Urinary problems, such as difficulty urinating and the need to do it more often, are often a consequence of inflammation of the prostate. An enlarged prostate can also cause weak or slow urine flow. If left untreated, there is a risk of developing a complete inability to urinate (acute urinary retention). Combodart helps alleviate urinary problems associated with BPH.
One Combodart capsule is taken once a day, approximately 30 minutes after the same meal every day (either breakfast, lunch, or dinner). It should be swallowed whole with the help of water. If you forget to take a dose, just skip it and take the next one as usual, at the usual time. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting a doctor.
The recommended dutasteride/tamsulosin dosage consists of one capsule (0.5 mg/0.4 mg) administered orally approximately 30 minutes after the same meal, each day. The capsules should be swallowed whole, without chewing or opening. Contact with the Combodart hard capsule content may cause irritation of the mucosa oropharyngeal.
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include:
- Skin rash (which can itch)
- Hives (like urticaria)
- Swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, arms, or legs
Contact your doctor immediately if you have these symptoms and stop using this medicine. A list of the known Combodart side effects includes the following:
Common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people)
- Impotence (inability to achieve or maintain an erection)
- Decreased sexual drive (libido)
- Difficulty in ejaculation
- Breast enlargement and tenderness (gynecomastia)
- Dizziness
Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
- Heart failure (the heart becomes less efficient at pumping blood through the body. This could cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, excessive tiredness, and swelling in the ankles and legs)
- Reduced blood pressure upon rising
- Faster than normal heartbeat (palpitations)
- Constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, feeling sick (nausea)
- Weakness or loss of strength
- Headache
- itchy, stuffy or runny nose (rhinitis)
- Skin rash, hives, itching
- Hair loss (usually from the body) or hair growth
Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)
- Sudden local swelling of the soft tissues of the body (eg throat or tongue), shortness of breath and/or often as an allergic reaction (angioedema)
- Fainting
Very rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
- Prolonged and painful erection of the penis (priapism)
- Severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
Interactions.
Dutasteride:
Interactions with Increased plasma concentrations with potent CYP3A4 enzyme inhibitors (eg ritonavir, indinavir, nefazodone, itraconazole, ketoconazole is given orally); verapamil or diltiazem (moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors and P glycoprotein inhibitors).
Tamsulosin:
Interactions with Increased hypotensive effects with anesthetics, PDE5 enzyme inhibitors, and other alpha1 adrenoceptor antagonists.
Interactions with Increased plasma concentrations with: and ketoconazole (a potent CYP3A4 inhibitor) and paroxetine (a potent CYP2D6 inhibitor). When co-administered with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors, a similar increase in tamsulosin hydrochloride exposure is to be expected in slow metabolizers of CYP2D6 compared to extensive CYP2D6 metabolizers.
Concomitant administration of tamsulosin hydrochloride (0.4 mg) and cimetidine (400 mg every six hours for six days) produced a decrease in clearance (26%) and an increase in AUC (44%) of tamsulosin hydrochloride. Special caution should be taken when dutasteride and tamsulosin are administered in combination with cimetidine.
Concomitant administration of warfarin and tamsulosin hydrochloride should be done with caution.
