Betoptic/Betaxolol
Betoptic eye drops are eye medication that belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers that contains as active ingredient betaxolol, which works by reducing the pressure inside the eye (intraocular), possibly due to reduced aqueous humor (fluid from the anterior chamber of the eye). Betoptic Suspension is indicated for reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma or with ocular hypertension. It can be used alone or in combination with other drugs that lower intraocular pressure.

About Betoptic
Betoptic is a topical application in ophthalmology. When the solution is instilled in the eye ophthalmic Betoptic, there is a reduction in intraocular pressure, whether normal or elevated, and whether or not accompanied by glaucoma.
Betoptic is a topical application in ophthalmology. This medicine demonstrated to be effective in reducing intraocular pressure and is indicated for the treatment of patients with:
- Chronic open-angle glaucoma
- High intraocular pressure (ocular hypertensive patients)
- Glaucoma or ocular hypertension in combination with other drugs.
The main active ingredient of Betoptic, Betaxolol hydrochloride is a receptor blocking agent (beta 11-adrenergic) cardioselective that has no membrane stabilizing activity (local anesthetic) and it is devoid of intrinsic sympathomimetic action. When the solution is instilled in the eye ophthalmic Betoptic, there is a reduction in intraocular pressure, whether normal or elevated, and whether or not accompanied by glaucoma.
The way Betoptic eye medication works is that its ophthalmic Solution decreases intraocular pressure (inside the eyes), probably by reducing the production of aqueous humour. The onset of action occurs within 30 minutes and the maximum effect can be seen 2 hours after use.
Betoptic uses include being effective in reducing intraocular pressure and can be used in patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to reduce intraocular pressure.
Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Wash your hands.
- Take the bottle (dropper container).
- Shake well before using.
- After opening the bottle for the first time, you must remove the plastic ring from the seal if it is loose.
- Hold the bottle upside down between your fingers.
- Tilt your head back. Gently separate the eyelid from the eye with a finger until a pocket forms, into which the drop should fall
- Bring the tip of the bottle close to the eye. A mirror may be helpful.
- Do not touch the eye or eyelid, nearby areas, or other surfaces with the dropper. The eye drops may become contaminated.
- Gently squeeze the base of the bottle with your index finger so that one drop falls each time
- After using this eye drop, press the edge of the eye next to the nose with your finger for 2 minutes. This helps prevent this medication from passing to the rest of the body.
- If drops are applied to both eyes, repeat all the previous steps with the other eye.
- Close the bottle tightly immediately after using the product.
If a drop falls out of the eye, try again.
If you are using other ophthalmic medications, wait at least 5 minutes between the administration of this eye drop and the other ophthalmic medications. Ophthalmic ointments should be administered last.
If you use more Betoptic Suspension than you should
An overdose in the eyes can be eliminated by washing the eyes with lukewarm water. Do not apply more drops until you touch it again.
The Betoptic dosage depends on the severity and age of the patient.
Use in adults
The recommended dose is 1-2 drop (s) in the affected eye (s) twice a day (morning and afternoon).
It may take a few weeks for a stable response to treatment.
Replacement therapy (monotherapy): If you are using another glaucoma medication and the doctor has told you to replace it with Betoptic Suspension, the first day you should continue with the same treatment and also administer 1 drop of Betoptic Suspension in the eye (s). ) twice daily. The next day, suppress the medicine used at the beginning, and continue only with Betoptic Suspension, with the usual dose.
Replacement therapy (multiple therapies): If you are being treated with several glaucoma medications, your doctor will tell you the dosage regimen, adjusting one drug at a time, with intervals of at least one week.
To further reduce intraocular pressure, your ophthalmologist may prescribe other medications to be used in conjunction with this medication.
Use in elderly patients
It is recommended to start treatment with the lowest recommended dose of betaxolol, as older patients are likely to have age-related conditions, such as heart problems or peripheral vascular disease.
If the clinical response is not adequate, your doctor may modify the dose to 2 drops of Betoptic.
Suspension in the affected eye (s) twice a day (morning and afternoon) with due precautions.
Use in children
Efficacy and safety in children have not been established.
The doctor should carefully evaluate the benefits and risks before prescribing this medicine to children, carrying out tests and the necessary history.
