The Arthrotec Medication is an all-in-one pain reliever and stomach protector. The active substance diclofenac belongs to the group of anti-inflammatory pain meds (relievers).
Arthrotec is an anti-inflammatory medicine that combines two components: diclofenac and misoprostol. These anti-swelling tablets relieve symptoms such as pain and swelling, redness, and overheating of the joints. Due to its protective action on the stomach, it is a medicine widely used by patients prone to stomach discomfort or at increased risk of suffering from gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding. Take this medicine with food to prevent stomach upset and to reduce the risk of diarrhea. While using this medication, avoid taking magnesium-containing antacids, as they can make diarrhea worse. If you need to take an antacid, ask your doctor or pharmacist for help in choosing a product.
If you are treating a chronic condition such as arthritis, ask your doctor about non-drug treatments and/or the use of other medications to treat pain.
Using Arthrotec for Arthritis is effective because it’s a medicine that combines two components: diclofenac and misoprostol. Diclofenac provides it with properties to fight inflammation (anti-inflammatory) and suppress pain sensation (analgesics), and misoprostol has a protective action on the mucosa of the stomach and duodenum. It’s a medicine that is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis in patients with an elevated risk of developing gastrointestinal lesions, because they are elderly patients or because they have a history of gastroduodenal ulcer.
Diclofenac is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis. Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID medication). Misoprostol protects the stomach from irritation caused by diclofenac. This combination medicine is used to treat arthritis in people who are at high risk for stomach / intestinal ulcers and ulcer complications (for example, bleeding).
The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and any other medications you are taking. Be sure to inform your doctor and pharmacist of all the products you use (including prescription and over-the-counter medications and herbal products). To reduce the risk of stomach bleeding and other side effects, take the lowest effective dose of this medication for the shortest time possible.
Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again. The tablet should preferably be taken after the main meals.
Swallow the Arthrotec tablet without chewing, using plenty of liquid. The pain-relieving effect of the medicine begins after about an hour and lasts from eight to twelve hours. Relief of symptoms such as swelling and redness may take a few days to notice. Arthrotec should preferably be taken during or after meals to reduce the risk of adverse effects.
Adults
The recommended dose is one coated tablet two or three times a day, according to medical criteria.
Elderly patients
No dosage adjustment is necessary for this type of patient. Patients with impaired liver function or moderately impaired renal function It is not necessary to adjust the dose in this type of patient, although it is recommended to start treatment with the lowest dose.
Use in children and adolescents
The efficacy and safety of the product have not been studied in children under 18 years of age.
Like all medicines, Arthrotec can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Gastrointestinal effects
The most frequent adverse effects that occur with medications such as Arthrotec are gastrointestinal: peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, perforations (in some cases fatal), especially in elderly patients. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, constipation, heartburn, abdominal pain, blood in the stool, canker sores, worsening of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have also been observed. Less frequently it has been noticed an outbreak of gastritis.
Diarrhea, which is usually of moderate and transient intensity, can be reduced by taking the coated tablets immediately after meals and avoiding the use of antacids containing magnesium.
Cardiovascular effects
Medications, such as Arthrotec, may be associated with a moderately increased risk of having a heart attack ("myocardial infarction") or brain attack.
Edema (fluid retention), high blood pressure, and heart failure have also been observed in association with treatments with Arthrotec-type medications.
Medicines such as Arthrotec can be associated, on very rare occasions, with very serious blistering reactions such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.
