Actonel is a medication used for the treatment of osteoporosis and Paget’s disease, along with other degenerative conditions of the bones. It contains the active ingredient Risedronate sodium, which belongs to a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates.
This medication helps the body to prevent the reabsorption of bone tissue, thereby strengthening the bones and improving treat conditions such as osteoporosis, which is a degenerative disease that causes the bones to weaken over time, leading to fractures, swelling and inflammation and pain. The medication works by inhibiting the action of osteoclasts, which are a type of cells in the body responsible for dissolving older tissues of the bone, after which a different kind of cells called osteoblasts deposits new layers of bone tissue.
In the human body, bones are continually repaired and dissolved. A type of cells called osteoclasts to remove and dissolve older bone tissue layers from areas that need repair on the skeleton, and the second type of cell called osteoblasts deposit new layers of bone tissues in the body. In diseases such as osteoporosis and Paget’s disease, new bone formation and the activity of osteoblasts, which create new bone tissues, is affected or impaired. This leads to a weakening of the bones over time, as old tissues are dissolved and removed by osteoclasts.
As the bones weaken, they may cause inflammation, pain and swelling and can easily fracture and lose their strength. The active compound of Actonel, Risedronate Sodium, inhibits the action of the cells that dissolve the bone tissue, thereby providing symptomatic relief for osteoporosis patients and decreasing the rate of weakening of the bones, leading to a better quality of life.
Actonel provides symptomatic relief from inflammation, swelling and pain for individuals suffering from Paget’s disease or osteoporosis and decreases the rate at which older bone tissue is dissolved. This means that bones can remain healthy for longer. The medication helps the body to delay the weakening of bones and helps avoid fracturing and breakage.
