Sorbsan Silver Ribbon is a regulated medical device from Aspen Surgical, a sterile Calcium Alginate Cavity Wound Dressing with Silver and Sterile Medical Probe, in a ribbon format of 40cm. Each unit includes one 40cm silver alginate ribbon and one sterile medical probe for cavity depth measurement.

Sorbsan Silver Ribbon combines the clinical properties of the flat ribbon format with the silver antimicrobial activity of the Sorbsan Silver range. The flat ribbon drapes along the wound cavity surface, providing broader contact between the silver alginate material and the wound walls than a round rope provides. This broader contact supports more even silver ion delivery and gel forming exudate absorption across the full cavity surface. The 40cm length accommodates longer or wider wound cavity dimensions.

As with Sorbsan Silver Packing, the product includes a sterile medical probe for measuring wound cavity depth before and after packing at each dressing change. Accurate cavity depth measurement is essential for determining the appropriate amount of ribbon to introduce and for monitoring whether the cavity is contracting and healing progressing. The probe is sterile and single use.

Sorbsan Silver Ribbon is for wound spaces where the flat ribbon format is more appropriate than a round rope. This includes wider or shallower cavities where the ribbon can be folded or layered to fill the space, wound margin areas and undermined wound edges with infection, and any infected wound space where a flat format provides better conformity to the wound geometry than a rope.

Sorbsan Silver Ribbon should be used for a defined clinical period based on the clinical signs of infection or critical colonisation present. Review the wound at each change. When infection signs have resolved, and the wound is producing clean granulation tissue, transition to standard Sorbsan Ribbon without silver. Prolonged silver dressing use without clinical review is not recommended.

Calcium Alginate Gel Forming and Exudate Management

The calcium alginate fibres in the ribbon absorb wound exudate through ion exchange. Sodium ions from wound fluid displace calcium ions from the alginate fibres, converting the flat ribbon from a dry fibrous material into a soft gel that conforms to the wound cavity surface. The gel absorbs and manages exudate at depth and across the width of the cavity, maintains a moist wound environment, and allows atraumatic retrieval at dressing change as the gelled ribbon does not adhere firmly to the cavity walls.

Silver Antimicrobial Activity

Silver incorporated into the alginate ribbon is released as silver ions when the dressing contacts wound moisture during the gel forming process. These ions diffuse into the wound environment within the cavity and act on bacteria through disruption of cell membranes, interference with respiratory enzyme systems, and binding to bacterial DNA. This activity, through multiple targets, provides broad spectrum antimicrobial coverage throughout the wound space during the dressing wear period. The flat ribbon format distributes this antimicrobial activity across the broader contact area of the cavity surface.

Sterile Medical Probe for Cavity Monitoring

The sterile medical probe included with each unit allows the clinician to measure wound cavity depth at each dressing change. Measuring the depth before packing guides how much ribbon to introduce. Repeating the measurement at successive changes tracks whether cavity depth is reducing as healing progresses. A consistently reducing depth confirms effective wound contraction. The probe also allows detection of any unexpected increase in cavity depth that might indicate the wound is not progressing as expected. The probe is sterile and single use per application.

Flat Ribbon Geometry

The flat ribbon format lies against the wound cavity surface rather than sitting as a cylinder within it. In wider or shallower cavities, this flat contact means more alginate surface area is in contact with the wound walls per unit length of material. The ribbon can also be folded to fit irregular cavity shapes while maintaining the flat contact against the wound surface. This broader contact supports more even exudate absorption and silver ion delivery across the full cavity geometry compared with a round rope format in the same wound space.

Assessment with the Sterile Probe

• Open one sterile Sorbsan Silver Ribbon unit at the dressing change.
• Use the included sterile medical probe to measure wound cavity depth before introducing the ribbon.
• Document the cavity depth at each change to monitor healing progress.

Wound Preparation

• Irrigate the wound cavity with sterile saline before introducing the ribbon.
• If the cavity is dry, moisten the ribbon with sterile saline before introduction.

Introducing the Ribbon

• Gently guide the 40cm ribbon into the wound cavity.
• Pack LOOSELY. Do not compress or overfill the wound space.
• In wider cavities, fold the ribbon gently to achieve loose contact with the cavity walls.
• Leave a visible tail of the ribbon outside the wound entrance.
• Document the length and configuration introduced at each change.

RETRIEVAL SAFETY: Confirm full retrieval at every dressing change before introducing new ribbon. Compare retrieved length with the documented length from the previous change. Do not introduce new ribbon until full retrieval is confirmed. Retained dressing material in a wound is a clinical incident.

Secondary Dressing

• Apply an appropriate secondary dressing over the wound entrance.
• Secure in place.

Removal

• Remove the secondary dressing first.
• Gently pull the retrieval tail to remove the ribbon.
• Moisten with sterile saline if the ribbon has not fully gelled and is adhering.
• Confirm full retrieval against the documented length from the previous change.
• Irrigate the cavity with sterile saline before introducing fresh ribbon.

Sorbsan Silver Ribbon 40cm with Sterile Medical Probe

Each unit of Sorbsan Silver Ribbon is supplied as one 40cm silver alginate ribbon and one sterile medical probe. The 40cm ribbon accommodates most infected cavity wound dimensions requiring a ribbon format. The ribbon may be cut to a shorter length where required, with the cut length documented. If more than 40cm of ribbon material is needed for a single cavity, additional units may be used, with each piece counted, documented, and confirmed as fully retrieved at the next change.

• Wider or shallower infected cavity wounds where the flat ribbon format provides better coverage than a round rope

• Elongated infected wound cavities where the 40cm ribbon length accommodates the wound dimensions
• Any infected or critically colonised wound space where a clinician has identified a silver flat ribbon as the appropriate dressing format
