What Is Ovranette?

Ovranette is a generic combined contraceptive pill, also known as birth control or ‘the pill’. Birth control pills like ovranette stop the process of ovulation (the monthly release of an egg from the ovary) so you can’t get pregnant. A combined pill is a convenient and reliable method of contraception. These pills contain synthetic hormones that alter the physiology of the womb, making it less susceptible to support a fertilized egg. Ovranette pills will not protect you against Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).

How Does Ovranette Work?

Ovranette pills contain two artificial versions of female sex hormones called oestrogen, ethinylestradiol and progestogen, levonorgestrel. These hormones stop the release of an egg from the ovary each month and thicken the fluid (mucus) at the neck of the cervix, making it harder for a sperm to reach an egg. These hormones also make the endometrium (lining of the uterus) thin, making it less likely to accept a fertilised egg.

What Are The Benefits Of Taking Ovranette?

There are several benefits of taking Ovranette pills regularly. Some of them are:

  • It is one of the most reliable reversible ways of contraception if used correctly.
  • It is also an easy and convenient way of contraception.
  • It makes your periods lighter and regular.
  • It helps with PMS and anaemia.
  • It relieves menstrual cramps.
  • It also reduces acne.

How Do I Use Ovranette?

Always use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Check with your doctor or pharmacist, if you are not sure how to use it.

Ovranette comes in a pack containing 21 pills. Each pill is marked with a day of the week. Each pill should be taken at the same time every day. The pills should be swallowed whole with water.

  • Take the first pill on the first day of your period, as soon as your bleeding starts. This is the day-1 of your menstrual cycle.
  • Take these pills at the same time every day regularly for the next 21 days.
  • After taking the pills for 21 days consecutively, the next 7 days are pill-free.
  • In the 7 pill-free days, you will experience withdrawal bleeding, just like your menstrual bleeding.
  • This bleeding may be lighter and less painful than your normal periods.
  • After 7 days, take the first pill from your next 21 pill pack even if you are still bleeding.

You don’t require any contraception in your seven pill-free days provided that you have taken your 21 pills correctly and start the next pack on time.

Ovranette Dosage

Endometriosis - continuous treatment, taking 2 tablets every day.

Bleeding of the womb (uterus) - as for oral contraception (treatment for 21 days followed by a 7 day break) but taking 2 tablets per day (for the first month or two your doctor may ask you to take 4 or 5 tablets a day). If bleeding from your womb is more serious your doctor may ask you to take 4 tablets immediately and then 4-8 tablets daily until the bleeding is controlled.

Painful menstruation (dysmenorrhoea) or pre-menstrual tension - the same dosage is used as that described for oral contraception (1 tablet daily for 21 days then a 7 day break before starting the next pack).

Precautions and Side Effects

Take the following precautionary steps to ensure safe administration of this medication:

Before taking Ovranette:

  • Tell your doctor your medical history, especially if you have or ever had a heart, kidney or liver problem or a blood or clotting disorder.
  • Make sure that you are not hypersensitive or intolerant to any ingredient present in this medication.
  • Check with your doctor if you have diabetes, hypertension or high blood fat levels, as these conditions improve the chances of blood clot formation (thrombosis).

While taking ovranette:

  • If you start your first pack on the day 2-5 of your period, you’ll have to take extra contraceptive precautions for the next seven days.
  • If you experience withdrawal bleeding during your 21 pill days, check with your doctor as it may mean that your pill is not working fully as a contraceptive.

What to Do If I Forget Taking My Pill?

  • If you are less than 12 hours late in taking your pill, take it as soon as possible and you’ll be fully protected. Continue taking further tablets at the usual time.
  • If you are more than 12 hours late, the contraceptive protection is most likely to be reduced, in that case take your pill as soon as you remember even if it means taking two pills at once. But you’ll require extra contraceptive protection for the next seven days and you should continue taking your pills regularly at the usual time.

Like every other medication, this one also has its side effects. The most common side effects of Ovranette are:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Break-through bleeding or spotting.
  • Changes in body weight
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Breast pain or breast tenderness.

If you experience any of these side effects or other ones not mentioned here, check with your doctor.
